SOFTBALL EARNS TWO SHUTOUT VICTORIES OVER PACE DURING FINAL DOUBLEHEADER OF REGULAR SEASON

Syracuse, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College softball team shutout the visiting Pace University Setters twice on Saturday afternoon at the Softball Complex on Senior Day to earn two Northeast-10 Conferences victories during Le Moyne's last doubleheader of the regular season.

Laura Bennett (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) tossed a one-hit shutout with zero walks and nine strikeouts during Le Moyne's 1-0 game one victory. Then Julia Panarella (Southington, Conn./Southington) allowed just five hits and zero runs in 7.0 innings of work during game two as the 'Phins scored four runs in the 1st inning to claim a 4-0 victory.

Cassidy Barrett (Apalachin, N.Y./Vestal) recorded the go-ahead RBI in game one, then went 2-3 at the plate in game two. Brooke Nicolaos (Liverpool, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse), Alyssa Dybacz (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker), Elaina Kassap (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach), and Victoria Catalano each drove in a run for the 'Phins during game two.

Following today's doubleheader, Le Moyne finished the regular season with a 12-14 conference resume, the same number of wins as Southern Connecticut State, which sits at eighth place in the NE10 standings. However, SCSU recorded a tie during the second game of its April 29 doubleheader against Southern New Hampshire University. That contest between the Penmen and the Owls was stopped in the 9th inning due to darkness while the score was 10-10. Because that game ended in a tie, the Owls have one less conference loss than the Dolphins, so Southern Connecticut State will get the eighth and final spot in the NE10 playoffs, while the Dolphins will be unable to compete in the postseason, snapping the program's Northeast-10 Conference record streak of 21 consecutive NE10 Championship appearances.

Bennett was dominant from the start in game one, as she struck out all three Adelphi batters during a 1-2-3 top of the 1st.

In the bottom of the 1st inning, Brooke Nicolaos smashed a pitch into the right-center field gap for a one-out double to give the 'Phins their first baserunner of the game. CJ Barrett did not make her stand on second base for long, as she ripped a single up the middle to bring Nicolaos around to score, giving the Dolphins an early 1-0 lead.

Bennett delivered 1-2-3 innings during the top of the 2nd and top of the 3rd. Through nine batters she had recorded nine outs. The redshirt-sophomore right-hander struck out two more batters in the top of the 4th, then struck out the side again in the top of the 5th to push her potential perfect game into the 6th inning.

Bennett got a fly ball for the first out of the 6th inning, but Pace's Carolina Iturriaga hit a line drive into center field during the next at-bat to break up Bennett's perfect game bid. After allowing her first base runner of the contest, Bennett got an infield pop up then a strike out to end the inning.

Pace's ace, Gisselle Garcia continued to deal for the Setters in the bottom of the 6th, delivering a 1-2-3 inning to give her team one final chance to tie the game in the 7th.

Bennett got two ground balls for the first two outs of the top of the 7th, then Zoie Iverson stepped to the plate for the Setters. Iverson took a pitch from Bennett to the opposite field, hitting a line drive into right . Le Moyne's right fielder Victoria Catalano got a good jump on the ball and sprinted in to her right towards the right-center field gap. Catalano slid and made an outstanding catch for the final out of the game, completing the 1-0 shutout victory for the 'Phins during game one.

During game two, Pace put runners on first and third with one out in the top of the 1st, but Panarella recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning and deny the Setters a run in the opening frame.

Le Moyne jumped on the Setters in the bottom of the inning.

Le Moyne's leadoff hitter, Isabelle Boudreau (Memramcook, New Brunswick/Mathieu-Martin/Pace) slapped a line drive down the left field line and sprinted into second base for a leadoff double in the bottom of the 1st.

Nicolaos dug in next, and hit a ball hard back up the middle into center field, which brought Boudreau around to score from second, putting the 'Phins up 1-0.

Barrett hit a hard ground ball towards the right side for a base hit to put runners on first and third with zero outs. Taylor Cox (Neversink, N.Y./Tri-Valley Secondary School) came in to pinch run for Barrett, and immediately stole second base.

With runners on second and third, Dybacz ripped a single through the right side. Nicolaos scored to make it 2-0, and Cox was held at third. Dybacz stole second, then Kassap lifted a fly ball to right field, which allowed both runners to tag up and advance a base. Cox crossed the plate to extend Le Moyne's lead to 3-0, giving Kassap an RBI sacrifice fly. With Dybacz on third base, Catalano hit a double into the right-center field gap to give the 'Phins a 4-0 advantage.

Panarella shut down the Setters in the top of the 2nd with a 1-2-3 inning, then did the same thing in the top of the 3rd.

Panarella allowed two consecutive singles to begin the top of the 4th, but then she got two strikeouts and a ground ball to end the inning and maintain her shutout.

Alexandra Tejeda hit a leadoff single for the Setters in the top of the 7th, but Le Moyne's defense continued to be solid behind Panarella as the first year right-hander got three ground balls that her infield took care of without a problem to end the game and secure the second win of the afternoon for the Dolphins.

Le Moyne finished the season with 20 wins, including 12 victories against NE10 opponents.
