Wilmington, Del. – The Le Moyne College women's tennis team had its season ended by top-seeded Wilmington University, 4-0, in the second round of the NCAA Championships on Saturday at the Delcastle Tennis Center.
The Wildcats edged the Dolphins in the doubles competition to take a 1-0 lead in the match. At the third position, Larize Nel and Fenna Swaan recorded a 6-1 win over freshman
Isabella Barona (Manta, Ecuador/Talentos de Manta) and senior
Brooke Fernandez (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd). Senior
Birdem Oz (Istanbul, Turkey/TED Ankara College Foundation HS) and junior
Francesca Lilliegren (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Colegio Alemán Humboldt Guayaquil) evened doubles at one apiece with a 6-3 victory at the first spot over Neus Ramos Moreno and Jess Purdy. The Wildcats clinched the point as Marley Trifunovic and Valentina Ivankovic posted a 7-5 victory over graduate student
Marta Nunez (Rye, N.Y./Antonio Lopez (Spain)) and sophomore
Fiona Pepper (Challapampa, Peru/Colegio Anglo Americano Prescott).
Wilmington captured each of the first three matches in the singles competition to finish to close out the match. Purdy cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win at the first position over Barona. Nel was a 6-3, 6-1 winner at the sixth spot over Fernandez. Begona Gomar closed out the match by blanking Pepper at the fourth position, 6-0, 6-0. Ramos Moreno and Ivankovic were up a set in their matches, as was Lilliegren for the Dolphins, when the match ended.
Le Moyne finishes the season with a 14-6 after making its first NCAA Championships appearance.
