Hooksett, N.H. – The Le Moyne College women's tennis team had its 11-match NE10 win streak snapped on Sunday with a 5-2 loss to Southern New Hampshire University at the Penmen Stadium Tennis Courts.
"It definitely was a great weekend with the women," said head coach
Jeff Lonczak '03. "Saturday we took care of business at Bentley. We were solid at all spots. Sunday was a different day and a great atmosphere with about 75 student-athletes showing up to watch. Third doubles showed up in a big way, but we couldn't overcome SNHU at first or second. Alicia and Paula had great wins at three and four, but SNHU was better today. We're hoping to have another shot at them at the conference tournament."
The Penmen took a 1-0 lead in the match by claiming the point in the doubles competition. SNHU took the lead as Alina Kupfer and Verena Weindl won at the second position, 6-2, over freshman
Stella Simeonova (Sofia, Bulgaria/National Gymnasium of Mathematics and Natural Sciences) and junior
Fiona Pepper (Challapampa, Peru/Colegio Anglo Americano Prescott). The Dolphins evened the doubles at one apiece as freshmen
Alicia Alvarez (Madrid, Spain/IES Ortega y Gasset) and
Paula Casares (A Coruna, Spain/Colegio Maristas Cristo Rey) defeated Isabella Andrade and Guntra Upeniece at the third spot, 6-4. Magdalena Hubickova and Alexxa Etienne clinched the point for their team with a 6-4 win at the top position over sophomore
Isabella Barona (Manta, Ecuador/Talentos de Manta) and senior
Francesca Lilliegren (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Colegio Alemán Humboldt Guayaquil).
Southern New Hampshire won four of the six matches in the singles competition. Kupfer gave the Penmen a 2-0 lead on the day with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Simeonova at the second spot. Hubickova recorded a 6-3, 6-1 victory at the top position over Barona for a 3-0 advantage. Alvarez got the Dolphins on the scoreboard by defeating Etienne at the third spot, 6-3, 6-4. Andrade clinched the match for the Penmen with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Lilliegren at the fifth position. Casares collected the win at the fourth spot after her opponent retired. Upeniece closed out the match with a 6-2, 7-5 win at the sixth position over Pepper.
Le Moyne (2-2, 1-1 NE10) is back in action on Tuesday for its first home NE10 match of the year against Saint Michael's College at 4:00 p.m.
