Clermont, Fla. – The Le Moyne College softball team dropped both games of their first doubleheader at the Spring Games on Saturday.
Lock Haven University picked up a 10-2 win over Le Moyne in five innings during game one, then the Dolphins fell 3-1 to Molloy University in the second half of their doubleheader.
Game 1 vs Lock Haven:
Sophomore right-hander
Julia Panarella (Southington, Conn./Southington) started in the circle against the Bald Eagles and went 4.0 innings before being replaced by redshirt-sophomore right-hander
Michaela Stockwell (Fort Plain, N.Y./Fort Plain).
Lock Haven senior righty Jada Schellhammer pitched all five innings for the Bald Eagles to earn the win.
The Bald Eagles broke the tie with five runs in the bottom of the third inning, then the 'Phins got two runs back in the top of the fourth.
Sophomore left fielder
Alyssa Dybacz (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W. Baker) led off the top of the fourth with a base hit to right field, then graduate catcher
Cassidy Barrett (Apalachin, N.Y./Vestal) reached first on a fielder's choice. With a runner on first and one out, first-year corner infielder
Audrey Benderski (Spring Lake Park, Minn./Spring Lake Park) turned on a pitch and hit a rocket off the left field wall to drive in Barrett all the way from first.
Senior first baseman
Mckenzie Bergdoll (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) stepped to the plate next and ripped a pitch back up the middle to drive in Benderski from second base.
Lock Haven extended their lead to 7-2 in the bottom of the fourth, then ended the contest with three more runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Game 2 vs Molloy:
Redshirt-junior right-hander
Laura Bennett (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) started game two in the circle for the 'Phins and tallied eight strikeouts in 7.0 innings pitched.
The Molloy Lions, who beat #8 University of Indianapolis during the first game of their Saturday doubleheader, scored all three of their runs against Le Moyne in the top of the second inning.
Bennett only allowed three baserunners, and zero runs, during the final five innings of the contest.
Molloy right-hander Amanda King tossed all seven innings for the Lions to earn the win. As a team the Dolphins struck out just twice during the setback, but the Lions made a handful of high-difficult defensive plays to keep the 'Phins scoreless through the first six innings.
Benderski hit a line drive that dropped in front of the left fielder to lead off the bottom of the second inning, but the Lions turned a double play to clear the bases.
Redshirt-sophomore third baseman
Frankie Larobardiere (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse/Onondaga C.C.) ripped a two-out single through the middle of the infield in the bottom of the fourth, but King recorded a strikeout to end the inning.
With one out in the top of the fifth, Molloy's Chrissie Huhn drove a pitch to left field that looked like it might drop in for a base hit, but Le Moyne senior left fielder
Dominique Russo (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) came charging in and made a diving catch to record the second out of the inning. After a single from Molloy infielder Karsyn Eaton, Bennett got another fly ball to left field, one that Russo did not need to lay out for, to end the inning.
Molloy put a runner on second base with two outs in the top of the sixth, but Bennett tallied her eighth strikeout during the next at bat to end the threat.
Larobardiere hit the ball hard at the right fielder to lead off the bottom of the seventh, but Molloy's Emma Bachman made the catch for the first out of the inning.
Benderski drew a walk to give Le Moyne a baserunner, then Bergdoll hammered a pinch-hit double deep into the right-center field gap, which allowed Benderski to score from first base.
With the tying run at the plate, senior outfielder
Jillian Dunn (Fiskdale, Mass./Tantasqua Regional) dropped down a bunt, but King got to the ball quickly and tagged Bergdoll between third base and home for the second out of the inning.
King got an infield pop up for the final out of the game.
The Le Moyne softball team will play another doubleheader at the Spring Games on Sunday. The Dolphins will take on Post University at 9:00 a.m. before battling Bloomfield College at 2:00 p.m.
