Buffalo, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College softball team split their final non-conference doubleheader of the season on Tuesday afternoon at D'Youville University.
The Saints claimed a 5-2 win during game one, then the 'Phins ended game two in five innings with an 11-0 victory.
D'Youville junior right-hander Lauren Booth held the 'Phins scoreless for 6.0 innings in game one despite surrendering six hits and six walks, then Le Moyne cut their deficit to 5-2 in the top of the seventh before relief pitcher Cassie Crerar got the final three outs to end the game.
Le Moyne senior center fielder
Isabelle Boudreau (Memramcook, New Brunswick/Mathieu-Martin/Pace) provided a team-best three hits during the setback.
Redshirt-sophomore right-hander
Michaela Stockwell (Fort Plain, N.Y./Fort Plain) started game one in the circle for the 'Phins and tossed 2.1 innings, then sophomore righty
Julia Panarella (Southington, Conn./Southington) pitched the final 3.2 innings in relief.
During game two in Buffalo, Le Moyne redshirt sophomore right-hander
Laura Bennett (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) earned her fifth consecutive victory in as many appearances to improve her season record to 7-5.
Bennett allowed just two hits and one walk with eight strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work against the Saints.
Sophomore right fielder/catcher
Alyssa Dybacz (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W. Baker) recorded a season-high three hits and a season-best three RBIs during game two, while Boudreau and freshman DP/first baseman
Audrey Benderski (Spring Lake Park, Minn./Spring Lake Park) both provided two hits.
"We committed five errors on routine plays and struggled to make adjustments at the plate until the end of the first game. It was too little, too late. Julia and Michaela threw well but we didn't provide enough run support to overcome our defensive miscues. We came out swinging in game two, and scored right away. I'm proud we bounced back, specifically after Dom Russo suffered an injury on a diving catch in left field. She was down for a while and it was very scary there for a few minutes. Our ability to compartmentalize and stay focused on what we could control following that play speaks volumes about the mental fortitude of this team. We've played 14 games since our last practice and we're looking forward to addressing areas of our game that were exposed over the last two weeks," said Le Moyne head coach
Tracey Roman following the doubleheader.
Game One:
The Saints scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning, then two more in the third and one in the sixth to take a 5-0 lead going into the final frame.
Le Moyne loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with zero outs, then scored two runs on a throwing error after the three-hitter
Mckenzie Bergdoll (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) put the ball in play towards the left side of the infield.
Crerar retired the next three batters in order to secure the win for D'Youville.
Game Two:
Dybacz ripped a one-out double to right-center field in the top of the first inning, then tagged up and moved to third on a Bergdoll fly ball to right.
With two outs, redshirt-sophomore third baseman
Frankie Larobardiere (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse/Onondaga C.C.) delivered an RBI double to the left center gap, then Benderski ripped a single through the left side of the infield, and Larobardiere crossed the plate following a throwing error.
The 'Phins doubled their lead in the top of the second on a two-RBI single from Dybacz, which drove in Boudreau and sophomore second baseman
Dominique Rinaldi (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville).
Le Moyne extended their lead to 7-0 in the top of the third with the help of a single from freshman shortstop
Alayna Bush (Adams, N.Y./South Jefferson) and another RBI single from Dybacz.
Boudreau, Bergdoll, Benderski and senior outfielder
Jillian Dunn (Fiskdale, Mass./Tantasqua Regional) each provided RBI singles in the top of the fifth as Le Moyne's lead grew to 11-0.
Bennett ended the game with three strikeouts in the bottom of the fifth.
The Le Moyne softball team will begin Northeast-10 Conference play this Saturday against Bentley University.
