Hooksett, N.H. – The Le Moyne College men's tennis team had its 21-match Northeast-10 Conference win streak snapped with a 4-3 loss to Southern New Hampshire University on Wednesday afternoon at the Ouellette Stadium Tennis Courts.
The Dolphins last lost a conference match at Merrimack College, 4-3, on April 14, 2019.
The Penmen jumped out to a 1-0 lead by claiming the point in the doubles competition. Aron Ouwejan and Phillipp Roeder registered a 6-4 win at the third position over graduate student
Fabian Sjokvist (Helsingborg, Sweden/Campeon Frigymnasium/Lincoln Memorial) and
Ethan Miller (Swindon, England/Cirencetser Kingshill School). Jonathan Berling and Fernando Torres clinched the point with a 7-5 victory over graduate student
Manuel Righi (Bologna, Italy/IPC Manfredi - ITC Tanari/Concordia (N.Y.)/Universita di Bologna) and
Peter Hatton (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt/Club Med Academics/Army West Point). Jesse Den Hartog and Cade Nadeau were trailing seniors
Kacper Piekarek (Wroclaw, Poland/Autorskrie Licea Artystyczne Akademickie/Missouri-Kansas City) and
Rodrigo Beires (Porto, Portugal/Agrupamento de Escolas Garcia de Orta/Universidade Portucalense), 5-4, when the point was clinched.
Southern New Hampshire earned wins at three of the first four spots to finish in the singles competition to secure the victory. Torres gave the Penmen a 2-0 lead on the day by defeating Miller at the third position, 6-3, 6-0. Berling, the reigning NE10 Player and Rookie of the Year, got SNHU within a point of the team win with a 6-2, 7-5 win at the first spot over Hatton.
Senior
Alberto Diaz (Tenerife, Spain/Benito Pérez Armas/Nebraska-Kearney/Midwestern State) got the Dolphins in the win column with a 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 win over Roeder at the fifth spot. Ouwejan clinched the match by downing Beires, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, at the sixth position. Righi improved to 11-0 in NE10 play in his career by recording a 7-6 (8-6), 7-5 victory at the second spot over Den Hartog. Piekarek earned the team's final point by rallying for a 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-0) win over Nadeau at the fourth position.
Le Moyne (11-3, 4-1 NE10) closes out the regular season on Saturday at the Skytop Tennis Courts at 12:00 p.m. against Saint Michael's College.
