ASSUMPTION TAKES DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST SOFTBALL

Worcester, Mass. – The Assumption University Greyhounds claimed two NE10 wins over the Le Moyne College softball team on Friday at Marois Field to snap the Dolphins' six-game conference winning streak.

The Greyhounds scored a go-ahead run in the bottom of the fourth inning in game one to claim a 2-1 win, then Assumption completed the sweep on their home field with a 5-0 victory during the second half of the doubleheader.

Le Moyne redshirt-junior right-handed pitcher Laura Bennett (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post), who had earned a victory in each of her last four starts prior to Friday's doubleheader, held the Greyhounds to six hits, zero walks and one earned run with seven strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work during the 2-1 setback. Senior first baseman Mckenzie Bergdoll (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) recorded a team-best two hits during the first half of the doubleheader, while freshman DP Audrey Benderski (Spring Lake Park, Minn./Spring Lake Park) drove in Le Moyne's lone run.

Assumption sophomore left-handed pitcher Anna Tassone earned a complete-game win by limiting the Dolphins to six hits and one walk, with just one strikeout, in 7.0 innings of work.

Redshirt-sophomore right-handed pitcher Michaela Stockwell (Fort Plain, N.Y./Fort Plain) started game two in the circle for the 'Phins, then freshman right-hander Rose Nicastro (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) threw 3.1 innings in relief, and sophomore righty Julia Panarella (Southington, Conn./Southington) did not allow a hit or run in the final 1.2 frames.

First-year shortstop Avery Linn (Bethpage, N.Y./Plainedge) tied her season high with two hits during the 5-0 defeat, while graduate catcher Cassidy Barrett (Apalachin, N.Y./Vestal) tallied her 100th career hit as a Dolphins with a base knock to center field in the top of the seventh.

Freshman right-hander Kaelin Waldron pitched all 7.0 innings for the Greyhounds during game two to earn her second complete-game shutout of the season.

Following Friday's doubleheader, the Dolphins drop to 18-17 overall, including 7-7 against Northeast-10 Conference competition. Le Moyne will have the opportunity to bounce back on Saturday, as they travel to American International College for an NE10 doubleheader against the Yellow Jackets at 12:00 and 2:00 p.m.

Game One:
Bennett recorded a 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts in the bottom of the first, then the 'Phins broke the tie in the top of the second.

Redshirt-sophomore third baseman Frankie Larobardiere (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse/Onondaga C.C.) led off the second inning for the Dolphins and ripped a fastball on the outside part of the plate into the left-center field gap. The line drive bounced all the way to the wall, and Larobardiere reached second base standing up.

During the next at bat, Benderski hammered a fly ball to deep center field. Assumption senior center fielder Jordan Dwyer ran straight back and caught the ball just inches away from the fence before crashing into it and falling to the ground. Larobardiere tagged up at second base and was able to round third and score on the play, giving Benderski a sacrifice fly and the 'Phins a 1-0 lead.

The Greyhounds answered back in the bottom of the second with the help of a leadoff single from junior catcher Corin Mahan, two stolen bases by the pinch runner Raigan Gregoire, and an RBI bunt single from sophomore first baseman Alyssa Johnson.

Junior left fielder Abigail Larson hit a double down the third base line during the next at bat to put runners on second and third with two outs, but Bennett struck out the next hitter swinging on a 1-2 riseball to end the inning and maintain the 1-1 tie.

With one out and nobody on base for Le Moyne in the top of the fourth, Bergdoll fouled off a 2-2 pitch before smacking an outside pitch into right field for a base hit.

Larobardiere then drew a four-pitch walk, which brought Benderski to the plate with runners on first and second.

Benderski swung at the first pitch she saw and ripped a hard ground ball back up the middle, beyond the glove of Assumption's diving shortstop, and into center field.

Dwyer charged forward and fielded the ground ball in center field as Bergdoll stepped on third and turned towards home.

Dwyer's throw home was perfect, a one-hopper that took a medium bounce right into the catcher Mahan's glove. Mahan dropped down to her left and applied the tag on Bergdoll in time to record an out at the plate and prevent the go-ahead run from scoring.

Tassone got a ground ball during the next at bat to end the inning and strand Le Moyne's two remaining runners.

Mahan reached base on an error to leadoff the bottom of the fourth for the Greyhounds, then was moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. Bennett recorded a strikeout for the second out of the inning, then Johnson ripped a triple to left field to drive in Mahan, record her second RBI of the contest, and give Assumption a 2-1 lead.

Le Moyne put runners on first and second in the top of the sixth following back-to-back one out singles from sophomore right fielder Alyssa Dybacz (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W. Baker) and Bergdoll, but a fielder's choice and a fly ball ended the inning and stranded two Le Moyne runners on base.

Tassone recorded a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the seventh to secure the 2-1 win for Assumption.

Game Two:
Assumption took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first following a sacrifice fly from Mahan, and a sacrifice bunt from senior DP Kali Scirocco.

Benderski ripped a one-out single to right field in the top of the second, but Waldron got a flyout and a groundout to end the inning.

Nicastro entered the game with nobody out and a runner on first in the bottom of the second. Le Moyne immediately recorded an out at first on a sacrifice bunt.

With a runner on second, Nicastro threw a 2-1 fastball past the swinging batter to even the count at 2-2. As Nicastro delivered the 2-2 pitch, the runner took off for third. The batter swung and missed on a pitch that painted the inside corner for strike three, then Barrett stood up and threw the runner out at third base to end the inning.

Assumption extended their lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third on an RBI single from Mahan.

Le Moyne put runners on first and second with one out in the top of the fourth, but a fielder's choice and a strikeout ended the inning and kept the Dolphins scoreless.

Nicastro did not allow a runner in scoring position during the bottom of the fourth, then Linn ripped a one-out single up the middle in the top of the fifth and stole second base during the next at bat to give the Dolphins a runner in scoring position.

Waldron got a ground ball to the left side for the second out, then got a fly ball to right field to end the inning and strand Linn at second.

Assumption's Mackenzie Bruggeman launched a pinch-hit home run to lead off the bottom of the fifth, then Scirocco recorded an RBI on a groundout later in the inning to extend the Greyhounds' lead to 5-0.

The 'Phins went down 1-2-3 in the top of the sixth, then Barrett delivered a leadoff single in the top of the seventh, but Waldron retired the next three batters in order to end the game.
