Syracuse, N.Y. – Southern New Hampshire University won its sixth Northeast-10 Conference men's tennis Championship in the last nine seasons with a 4-2 victory over top-seeded Le Moyne College on Sunday afternoon at the Skytop Tennis Courts.
Le Moyne, which fell to 12-4 on the season, will now await word on a likely NCAA Championship berth as the NCAA Selection Show airs on Monday at 8:00 p.m. on NCAA.com. In the most recent NCAA East Region rankings, the Dolphins were slotted fifth and the NCAA will select five programs for the NCAA East Regional this season.
Southern New Hampshire, which fell to the Dolphins, 4-3, in last year's title match, took a 1-0 lead on the afternoon by collecting the point in the doubles competition. Seniors
Kacper Piekarek (Wroclaw, Poland/Autorskrie Licea Artystyczne Akademickie/Missouri-Kansas City) and
Rodrigo Beires (Porto, Portugal/Agrupamento de Escolas Garcia de Orta/Universidade Portucalense) put the Dolphins in front by cruising to a 6-0 victory over Phillipp Roeder and Aron Ouwejan at the third position. Jonathan Berling and Fernando Torres evened doubles at one apiece with a 6-3 win at the first spot over sophomore
Peter Hatton (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt/Club Med Academics/Army West Point) and graduate student
Manuel Righi (Bologna, Italy/IPC Manfredi - ITC Tanari/Concordia (N.Y.)/Universita di Bologna). Jesse Den Hartog and Cade Nadeau clinched the point for the Penmen with a 7-5 victory over graduate student
Tom Jarry (Paris, France/CNED Toulouse/Emmanuel) and senior
Ethan Miller (Swindon, England/Cirencetser Kingshill School) at the second position.
Le Moyne, which won the last two NE10 titles, claimed the first two points of the singles competition, but Southern New Hampshire answered back with three straight wins to capture the championship. Jarry was victorious in straight sets over Torres, 6-3, 6-2 at the third spot to claim his 10th dual-match win of the year. Hatton avenged a loss in last year's title match by defeating Den Hartog, the NE10 Co-Player of the Year, at the first position, 7-5, 6-3. Berling evened the match at two apiece with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Righi at the second spot. The loss marked Righi's first in a dual match this season after 14 wins and just the second in his 34 decisions as a Dolphin. Roeder put the Penmen back in front with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at the fifth position over graduate student
Alberto Diaz (Tenerife, Spain/Benito Pérez Armas/Nebraska-Kearney/Midwestern State). After dropping the first set at the fourth spot to Piekarek, Nadeau forced a third set with a 7-6 (7-5) win in the second set. Nadeau then clinched the championship for the Penmen with a 6-2 win in the third set.
Beires was trailing Ouwejan in the tie-breaker of the third set at the sixth spot after winning the first set, 6-4 and dropping the second set, 2-6, while Ouwejan had a 5-4 lead in the third set tie-breaker when Nadeau clinched the championship.
During the post-match awards ceremony, Piekarek was announced as the recipient of the Elite 24 Awards for the second straight year for having the highest GPA at the championship.
