Syracuse, N.Y. – After the Le Moyne College baseball team (26-16, 11-5 NE10) won a pair of two-run games over the visiting Adelphi University Panthers (18-24, 5-11) on Thursday afternoon at Dick Rockwell Field, the Panthers answered back with a 10-8 win during game three of the series on Friday to snap Le Moyne's 10-game conference win streak. The Dolphins then earned a 7-6 win in the series finale to claim their third consecutive Southwest Division series win.
The 'Phins previously completed four-game sweeps of Saint Rose (14-22, 4-11 NE10) and Pace (25-16, 5-9 NE10), and following three wins over the Panthers they sit in second place in the NE10 Southwest Division Standings behind Southern Connecticut State (28-10, 11-3 NE10).
The Le Moyne baseball program celebrated "Senior Day" on the field prior to Friday's doubleheader.
Nick Nevins,
Philip Zollo,
Drew Carroll,
John Geer,
Jacob Maser, and
Sam DiGeorge were each recognized for their commitment and contributions to the Le Moyne baseball program.
The Dolphins and the Panthers combined for 16 home runs during the four-game series. Le Moyne launched a combined five home runs during Thursday's doubleheader, then the 'Phins recorded six long balls on Friday while the Panthers recorded three home runs during game one, and two more during the series finale.
"That was a great way to finish the weekend," said Le Moyne head coach
Scott Cassidy '98 following the Dolphins' 11
th conference victory in their last 12 games. "On a day where the ball was flying out [of the park], Billy (Hoffacker) really did an outstanding job to shut them down to secure the win. This was a big series win for us. I'm very proud of the way these guys continued to battle and not give away any at bats," Cassidy added.
On Friday, Adelphi established a 10-2 lead over the 'Phins in the fifth inning during game one (a seven-inning contest), before Le Moyne clawed back and brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh. After a
Benji Ries (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) solo home run in the final frame made it a two-run game, Carroll ripped a two-out single to left field, bringing Nevins to the plate. Nevins, who had an outstanding series against the Panthers (9 hits, 6 runs, 2 home runs and 7 RBI during the four games) swung at the first pitch he saw and smoked a line drive to left field, but the Adelphi fielder made the catch to end the game and extinguish Le Moyne's comeback bid.
Adelphi senior right-hander Tommy O'Sullivan entered the game following Carroll's single in the seventh and threw just one pitch to Nevins to earn the save. Sophomore righty Jordan Falco earned the win for Adelphi after completing 4.1 innings of work.
Le Moyne sophomore left-handed pitcher
Jacob Crystal (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) started game one of Friday's doubleheader and went 3.1 innings, then redshirt-sophomore right-hander
Jordan Goldmann (Encinitas, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy/Palomar College/Grossmont College) completed 2.2 innings of work before senior righty
Philip Zollo (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) delivered a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the seventh.
Le Moyne faced a 6-3 deficit midway through the fifth in game two, then Nevins delivered a three-run home run to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth before Carroll drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh with a double over the center fielder's head that allowed Ries to score from second base.
Freshman right-handed pitcher
AJ Petraitis (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) started game two of Friday's doubleheader and delivered his third consecutive conference start with at least 6.0 innings pitched, each time putting the 'Phins in position to win their conference series finale. After tossing 7.0 innings on April 22 at Pace and holding the Setters to just five hits and one run to earn his second collegiate victory, Petraitis went 6.0 innings against the Panthers before being replaced by junior righty
Billy Hoffacker (Erial, N.J./Timber Creek/Rowan College of South Jersey).
Hoffacker allowed a double to the first batter he faced in the top of the seventh, then locked in and retired the next nine hitters in order to secure the win for the 'Phins. After Le Moyne took a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the seventh, Hoffacker recorded clutch 1-2-3 innings in the eighth and ninth to earn his first win as a Dolphin. The 6'5" right-hander finished with three strikeouts to zero walks in 3.0 innings of work.
After providing a home run in both games on Thursday, graduate first baseman
Dewey Roden (Sherrill, N.Y./Vernon-Verona-Sherrill/UMass Lowell) launched his third home run of the series during the 10-8 setback. Following the four-game series, Roden and Nevins each have a team-best four home runs during conference play. Roden leads the Dolphins with 37 RBI on the year.
Freshman catcher/designated hitter
Brody Keneston (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa), who delivered a grand slam walk-off home run during game one of the series on Thursday, smashed a solo home run during Le Moyne's comeback effort in game three on Friday.
Just like Nevins, Keneston tallied a total of seven RBI during the Adelphi series. The rookie from Ballston Spa has delivered 35 RBI so far this season as Le Moyne's cleanup hitter.
Adelphi sophomore center fielder Johnny Catuosco provided five RBI during Adelphi's lone win of the series, including a two-run home run and a two-RBI single.
Senior center fielder
Zach Brush (New York Mills, N.Y./New York Mills) provided a two-run home run, his second long ball of the season, to give Le Moyne a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth during game two of Friday's doubleheader.
Adelphi senior second baseman Anthony Cipri and graduate left fielder Kyle Olson each smacked a two-run home run in the top of the fifth to give Panthers a 6-3 advantage, then Nevins tied the game with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the inning.
After Hoffacker stranded a runner at third in the top of the seventh to maintain the 6-6 tie, Ries was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the inning. Junior left fielder
Jason Boule (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse)) dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move Ries into scoring position, then Carroll hammered a double to the wall to drive in Ries and give the 'Phins a 7-6 lead. Hoffacker and Le Moyne's defense took care of the rest to secure the team's 11
th NE10 victory.
Freshman right-hander Brendan Kenneally tossed the first 5.0 frames of game two for Adelphi, then O'Sullivan made his second appearance of the afternoon and threw 1.1 innings in relief during the second half of the doubleheader before senior right-handed pitcher Jacob Dannenberg held the 'Phins scoreless with two strikeouts during the final 1.2 frames.
Freshman third baseman/left fielder
Adam Sullivan (Syracuse, N.Y./Marcellus) still leads all NE10 Southwest Division hitters with 20 RBI during conference games, while Keneston and Nevins are close behind with 14 RBI each during NE10 play.
Le Moyne's veteran middle infield duo of Carroll and Nevins provided a combined eight assists on defense during the 7-6 victory. Nevins provided at least two hits in all four games against Adelphi.
After contributing two doubles, a single, two runs scored and an RBI during the final two games of the Pace series, Boule tallied a combined five hits, including his first career home run, to go along with three runs and three RBI during the four-game series against the Panthers.
The Le Moyne College baseball team will play their final four-game series of the regular season on May 5 and 6 at New Haven.
Prior to their series victory over the Panthers, the Dolphins were included in the alphabetical order list of the East Region Top 10 Poll.
