Newark, Del. – The second-seeded Goldey-Beacom College baseball team defeated third-seeded Le Moyne College on Saturday at University of Delaware's Bob Hannah Stadium in the East Regional #2 Finals to force a winner-take-all game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
The Dolphins defeated the Goldey-Beacom Lightning on Friday by a score of 6-1 to improve to 2-0 in the 2023 NCAA Tournament, but the Lightning prevailed in their elimination matchup on Saturday afternoon against sixth-seeded Queens College, then they bested the Dolphins 7-5 in the nightcap to keep their season alive.
The winner of Sunday's matchup between the Lightning and the Dolphins will advance to the NCAA East Super Regional at top-seeded Southern New Hampshire University.
Le Moyne freshman designated hitter
Brody Keneston (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa), who launched three home runs during Le Moyne's win on Friday, delivered a three-run home run on Saturday against the Lightning to tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Lightning had struck first in the opening frame with a three-run home run by junior third baseman Darin Miller, then they took back the lead with three runs in the top of the sixth following Keneston's game-tying bomb.
Graduate second baseman
Drew Carroll (Clifton Park, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Albany)) trimmed Le Moyne's deficit to one run in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run home run over the left field wall. The Lightning got a run back in the top of the seventh on an RBI sacrifice fly from junior designated hitter Dante DiSabatino, then GBC junior relief pitcher Karl Schmidt held the Dolphins scoreless over the final three frames to improve his 2023 record to 4-0.
Sophomore left-handed pitcher
Jacob Crystal (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) started on the mound for the Dolphins and completed 4.2 innings of work, then redshirt-sophomore right-hander
Jordan Goldmann (Encinitas, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy/Palomar College/Grossmont College) got the final out in the fifth inning and tossed the next three innings for the 'Phins before junior righty
Billy Hoffacker (Erial, N.J./Timber Creek/Rowan College of South Jersey) pitched a scoreless top of the ninth.
Carroll and senior center fielder
Zach Brush (New York Mills, N.Y./New York Mills) both recorded a team-best two hits during the setback, while Carroll, Keneston, fifth-year shortstop
Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham), graduate first baseman
Dewey Roden (Sherrill, N.Y./Vernon-Verona-Sherill/UMass Lowell) and freshman third baseman
Lukas Egenhauser (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) each scored a run. Nevins added a hit to the Le Moyne cause on Saturday, giving him at least one hit in all seven of Le Moyne's postseason contests this month.
Keneston now has 10 home runs on the year. He has tallied a combined five hits, four runs scored, four home runs and eight RBI during Le Moyne's three games in East Regional #2.
Both the Dolphins and the Lightning will be looking to earn their first trip to the NCAA Super Regional during tomorrow's matchup at 1:00 p.m.
#10/22 Southern New Hampshire advanced to the Super Regional after besting fourth-seeded Franklin Pierce and fifth-seeded Pace University in East Regional #1. As the top seed in the East Region, SNHU will host the best-of-three Super Regional on May 26 and 27.
As a team, the Dolphins have now launched 60 home runs (most by a Le Moyne team since 2004) and have accumulated 316 runs batted in.
