CORNELL PULLS AWAY IN SECOND HALF FOR 17-4 WIN OVER WOMEN’S LACROSSE

Syracuse, N.Y. – Maggie Pons tallied five points to lead Cornell University to a 17-4 victory over the Le Moyne College women's lacrosse team on Tuesday afternoon at Ted Grant Court.

The Big Red opened the game's scoring with the first two goals. Kylie Gelabert got Cornell on the scoreboard at the 11:36 mark off a pass from Pons. Just 45 seconds later, Sophie Ward found the back of the net after taking a feed from Pons.

Le Moyne cut its deficit in half at the 9:30 mark as sophomore midfielder Sara Hunter (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) netted her first goal of the season.

Josie Vogel netted her first goal of the game with 7:04 remaining on a free-position shot to push the margin back to two.

Senior midfielder Rhonee Shea Pal (Canastota, N.Y./Bishop Grimes) followed with a free-position goal at the 5:12 mark for her sixth tally of the season.

The Dolphins evened the score at three apiece one minute into the second quarter as freshman midfielder Julia Blakeslee (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) tallied her first career goal off a free-position shot.

The Big Red countered with the final four goals of the quarter. Bridget Babcock gave Cornell the lead for good with 12:43 left. Following a save by goalkeeper Ellie Horner, Caitlin Slaminko tallied her third goal of the season with 10:01 to go. Just over three and one-half minutes later, Pons netted her fifth goal of the season after taking a pass from Caitlin Tully. Gelabert completed the half's scoring just 27 seconds later for a 7-3 advantage. Cornell had a turnover and two shots saved on its final three possessions of the half, while the Dolphins turned the ball over on each of their three possessions before halftime.

Cornell extended its run to six goals with the first three of the third quarter. Slaminko put the Big Red up by five only 78 seconds into the period. Only 62 seconds later, Dillyn Patten recorded her second goal of the season after collecting a feed from Pons. Ward got her team into twin figures at the 11:06 mark off a dish from Babcock.

Sophomore midfielder Jane Austenfeld (Lisle, N.Y./Whitney Point) ended Le Moyne's scoring drought of almost 19 minutes with a free-position goal in an extra-player situation with 10:08 to go.

The Big Red pushed their lead to double digits with the final four of the quarter. Babcock converted a free-position shot in an extra-player situation with 7:49 left in the period. Just 1:03 later, Vogel found the back of the net. Ella Wilmot made it 13-4 with 2:34 left off a pass from Pons. Vogel wrapped up the quarter's scoring with two seconds left after receiving a feed from Alexa Donahoe.

Cornell scored each of the three goals in the fourth quarter. Vogel registered her fourth goal of the game with 9:32 to play. In a player-down situation, Ward scored with 4:50 remaining after collecting a pass from Babcock. Bailey Mutch ended the game's scoring with 2:12 left off a feed from Wilmot.

Fifth year goalkeeper Paige Crandall (Adams, N.Y./South Jefferson) tallied 11 saves in between the pipes for the second straight game. Senior Lilly Locastro (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) led the Dolphins defensively with four caused turnovers and a career-high seven ground balls, while freshman midfielder Maddi Barney (Lorraine, N.Y./South Jefferson) had three caused turnovers. Horner turned away three shots over the first three quarters of the game for the win.

Le Moyne (1-1) kicks off a stretch of three straight games against MAAC foes next Wednesday at Niagara University at 3:00 p.m.
