Syracuse, N.Y. – Sophia Colver capped a hat trick with the go-ahead goal to lead sixth-seeded Wagner College to a 13-11 victory over the third-seeded Le Moyne College women's lacrosse team in the first round of the Northeast Conference Tournament on Sunday afternoon at Ted Grant Field.
With the setback, the Dolphins finish their first season back at the Division I level with a 9-9 record, including an 8-2 mark in their initial season in the NEC.
With four caused turnovers in the contest, senior defender
Lilly Locastro (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) broke the program's single-season record and finished the year with 47. The previous record of 45 was set by Vicki Graveline '17 during the 2017 season. She wraps up her career with 100 caused turnovers, the fourth-most in the program's history. With four ground balls in the game, she concludes her career with 137 ground balls, which ties for the ninth-most in the program's history and tied for the fourth-most since 2000.
The Dolphins opened the game's scoring just 83 seconds into the contest as senior attacker
Reilly Geer (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) netted her 18th goal of the season.
The Seahawks answered back 68 seconds later as Kelsey Scheidel netted her 31st goal of the season.
Le Moyne regained the lead with the next two goals. Just before the possession clock was to expire, senior attacker
Sarah Hutchings (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) recorded her 31st goal of the campaign with 10:57 remaining. Following four and one-half minutes of scoreless action, freshman attacker
Emily Noel (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) converted a free-position shot for her fifth marker of the season.
Wagner scored four times in the final six minutes of the quarter to take a two-goal lead. Ella Marino started the run with her 18th goal of the year with 5:50 to go. Scheidel evened the score at three apiece with 4:09 left in the period. Following a possession clock violation on the Dolphins and a Le Moyne yellow card, Colver scored her first goal of the game with 1:49 left to put her team in front. The Seahawks took advantage of a Le Moyne crease violation to regain possession and raced upfield before Kendra Hall scored off a feed from Marino in a player-down situation for the final goal of the quarter.
The Seahawks continued their run with the first two goals of the second quarter. Nia Scott netted the first of the two with 12:06 left for her 15th goal of the season. The Seahawks took their largest lead of the game with 7:56 left as Colver scored in an extra-player opportunity.
Le Moyne responded with the final five goals of the half to take the lead back. Geer ignited the run at the 6:00 mark by finishing off a feed from Hutchings, who moved her past
Gemma Addonizio '23 for 17th on the program's career points list with her 165th and she became the 16th Dolphin with 50 career assists. Only 42 seconds later, sophomore midfielder
Sara Hunter (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) netted her 12th goal of the year to force a Wagner timeout. Following three empty possessions by each team over the next three minutes, junior attacker
Reagan McQuade (Endwell, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) fired in a free-position shot with 2:10 left. McQuade scored her second straight extra-player goal 53 seconds later off a feed from Noel for her 13th goal of the season. Following a turnover by each team, Geer found the back of the net with 27 seconds left off a dish from Hutchings for her 20th goal of the year to put the Dolphins in front.
Scheidel evened the score at eight apiece at the 11:50 mark after collecting a pass from Amelia Logan.
Le Moyne regained the lead just over two minutes later as freshman midfielder
Maddi Barney (Lorraine, N.Y./South Jefferson) posted her ninth marker of the season after taking a feed from Noel.
The teams traded goals in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter. Following a yellow card on the Dolphins, Marino scored at the 14:10 mark off a dish from Colver to even the score at nine. Just over one minute later, the Dolphins took the lead for the final time as junior attacker
Grace Detor (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) tallied her 24th goal of the season.
Wagner scored the next three goals to take a two-goal lead again. Kristina Pisano tied the score for the last time with 10:17 to play with her second goal of the season. Colver gave the Seahawks the lead for good with her 22nd goal of the campaign with 8:56 remaining. Following two empty possessions by each team over the next five minutes, Megan Greco scored her 26th goal of the year off a pass from Scheidel.
Following a turnover by each team and a saved shot by the Dolphins, Hutchings drew a foul with 1:02 remaining and converted the ensuing free-position shot to get the Dolphins with one with 1:00 left.
The Seahawks won the ensuing draw, but turned the ball over with 42 seconds later. Le Moyne was unable to capitalize as the Dolphins turned the ball over before getting the ball into their offensive end. Wagner raced the ball upfield and it made its way to Greco in front of the net, where she put a shot by the goalkeeper for the final goal of the game.
Fifth year goalkeeper
Paige Crandall (Adams, N.Y./South Jefferson) registered 10 saves in her final collegiate game. Hutchings is the first Dolphin to lead the team in goals and assists since Erica Geremia '16 did so in 2016 and just the sixth Dolphin overall. Grace DeCarolis made nine saves in the win for the Seahawks.
