Syracuse, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College softball team (17-34, 8-13 NEC) hosted Stonehill College (12-34, 6-19 NEC) for their last game of the series on Tuesday. The Dolphins took home the win, 5-1 for their last home game of the season.
The first inning went without any runs for both teams, but in the top of the second Chloe Kelly reached first on an error by shortstop as Emily Nardelli scored for the Skyhawks (1-0).
In the bottom of the third, freshman second baseman
Shannon Gavigan (Havertown, Pa. / Haverford) drew a walk to lead off for the Dolphins. Sophomore left-fielder
Avery Linn (Bethpage, N.Y. / Plainedge) then singled up the middle and Gavigan advanced to second. Junior shortstop
Dominique Rinaldi (Sayville, NY/Sayville) singled to right field as Linn advanced to second and Gavigan scored (1-1).
In the bottom of the fourth, graduate first baseman
Mckenzie Bergdoll (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) doubled to center field to lead off for the Dolphins. Freshman second baseman
Gabriella Zarcone (Smithtown, N.Y. / Smithtown East) entered to pinch run for Bergdoll at second. Sophomore designated player
Audrey Benderski (Spring Lake Park, Minn./Spring Lake Park) drew a walk landing her on first. Freshman
center-fielder
Sydney Nesci (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) then reached on a fielder's choice to shortstop as Benderski was tagged out at second and Zarcone advanced to third. Graduate student catcher
Brandi Feeney (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse/Saint Peter's) then drew a walk and Nesci advanced to second. Gavigan stepped up to the plate and reached on a fielder's choice to second on a fielder error by second base. Nesci advanced to third and Zarcone scored (2-1). Gavigan followed by advancing to second on a wild pitch while Nesci scored and Feeney advanced to third on the pitch and scored on a throwing error by the catcher (4-1).
The Dolphins solidified the win with Nesci singling to right in the bottom of the sixth. Nesci then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Feeney grounded out to first as Nesci would advance to third. Gavigan then grounded out to second and as Nesci would score. The Dolphins took home the series winning game 5-1 over the Skyhawks.
Graduate pitcher
Laura Bennett (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post) would be credited the win this game bringing her record to 10-19 this season.
The Dolphin's next and final series will be Saturday, May 4
th for a conference series at LIU. The series will consist of a doubleheader on Saturday at 1pm and 3pm with the final game of the season taking place on Sunday, May 5
th at 12pm – LIU Softball Complex, Brookville, N.Y.
