Brooklyn, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College softball team (17-37, 8-16 NEC) competed agaist LIU (32-19, 17-7 NEC) for a double header to close out their last regular season series on Saturday, LIU prevailed winning both games over the Dolphin's; 8-0 and 6-3.
"I'm not sure what I expected in year one of this transition, but I think 17 wins is a good starting point" said head coach
Tracey Roman. "I'm so proud of our team. We competed our tail's off for 54 games. There was no quit in our team no matter what was happening game to game and inning to inning. I'm grateful to our veterans for the contributions they've made to Le Moyne softball and their commitment to elevate our program through this first year of transition. We will miss them tremendously."
First Game:
In the bottom of the first, LIU scored two runs off a Double from Mari Narvaiz who brought home both Emma Niece and Dallas Andrews (2-0). In the bottom of the second, the Sharks scored four more runs starting with a ground out from Andrews which Victoria Zatko scored off of (3-0). Pricilla Gillies then scored on a wild pitch and Alexia Castro singled to second as Gabby Padilla scored (5-0). To close out the inning, Narvaiz hit a single to left as Niece would bring in the sixth run for the Sharks.
In the bottom of the fifth, Gillies singled to left as Narvaiz scored and Andrews hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Nyae' Dick to end the game early with a run rule in the fifth inning. The sharks won this game 8-0.
Freshman pitcher
Arianna Exarchakis (Monroe, N.Y. / Monore-Woodbury) saw one inning this game as she had recorded two groundouts against the Sharks and one strikeout.
Redshirt-junior pitcher
Michaela Stockwell (Fort Plain,NY/Fort Plain) pitched 3.2 innings recording four force outs and seven ground outs.
Second Game:
The Dolphins were the first to record any runs during the second game starting out with Exarchakis leading off the second inning with a homerun to center field (1-0).
Freshman center-fielder
Sydney Nesci (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) followed sending a single to left field. Freshman second baseman
Shannon Gavigan (Havertown, Pa. / Haverford) then singled to center while Nesci advanced to second. Sophomore shortstop
Avery Linn (Bethpage, N.Y. / Plainedge) loaded the bases as she reached first on an error by the first baseman. Junior right fielder
Alyssa Dybacz (Baldwinsville, N.Y. / Charles W. Baker) then hit a sacrifice fly out to left field while Nesci scored (2-0).
LIU scored their first run in the bottom of the fourth as Andrews singled to right field and then followed by advancing to third off Lily Hinkle reaching on an error by third base. Niece then singled to right field bringing home Andrews (1-2).
The Sharks gained the lead in the bottom of the fifth with Kaylee Clarkson singling to center field. D. Medina hit a sacrifice ground out to the pitcher as Clarkson would advance to second and Dick would enter to pinch run at second for Clarkson. Andrews followed by singling to right field as Dick advanced to third. Andrews then stole second and Hinkle doubled to center bringing home Dick and Andrews (3-2). Niece would add one more run to close out the inning as she doubled to center and brought home Hinkle (4-2).
In the top of the sixth, Nesci stepped up and slammed the ball over the fence giving the Dolphins a chance to regain the lead.
The Sharks came out fighting in the bottom of the sixth as Narvaiz answered with a homerun herself, and Hinkle singled to right field as Clarkson would score the sixth and final run for the Sharks.
LIU would take this game 6-3 over the Dolphins.
