Brooklyn, N.Y. – The LIU Sharks claimed a 59-48 win over the Le Moyne College women's basketball team Thursday afternoon at LIU's Steinberg Wellness Center in the first Northeast Conference game of the season for both sides.
The Sharks knocked down a season-high 10 three-point field goals to claim their fourth home win of the season.
Freshman guard Brianna Mead scored a game-high 16 points on 6-8 shooting from the field, including 4-6 from three-point range and dished out four assists, while sophomore guard Janessa Williams shot 5-12 from three to finish the contest with 15 points in addition to seven rebounds.
Junior guard Sirviva Legions added 12 points, five rebounds and five assists for LIU.

Sierra Linnin (Valley Cottage, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) led Le Moyne in scoring for the third time in the team's last four games with 13 points to go along with two rebounds and two steals. Linnin's third and final three of the contest marked no. 147 for her Le Moyne career, which ties her with Liz Millea for third on the program's all-time career made threes list.
Freshman guard
Eli Clark (Oakhurst, N.J./Ocean Township) tallied eight points, four rebounds and a season-high tying five assists, while graduate forward
Megan Bodziony (Wakefield, R.I./St. Andrew's School/Fordham/Bryant) provided eight points and a career-high nine rebounds.
Le Moyne shot 17-20 from the free-throw line during the setback, compared to 1-2 for the Sharks.
The two free throws are the fewest allowed by Le Moyne in a game since the 2022-23 season.
The Dolphins held a 30-25 lead at halftime, but the Sharks outscored Le Moyne 18-7 in the third period, and shot 8-18 (44%) from three-point range in the second half to maintain a lead for the final 15:29 of game time.
The Dolphins knocked down four threes in the opening quarter, with two from Linnin, one from
Haedyn Roberts (Holland Patent, N.Y./Holland Patent) and one from Clark, to establish a 17-15 lead after 10 minutes of play.
A layup from Patricia Sherrill at the 8:58 mark of the second tied the game at 17-17, then the Dolphins went on an 11-0 run with the help of seven made free throws, including four from senior guard
Emily Florvil (Brooklyn, N.Y./Nazareth) that capped the run and gave the Dolphins a double-digit lead at the 3:11 mark.
The Sharks ended the run with 2:14 left in the third with a jumper from Legions. LIU then closed the quarter on an 8-2 run to cut its deficit to 30-25 at the intermission.
Legions then scored the first two baskets of the third quarter to key a 7-0 run for the Sharks that gave them a 32-30 lead.
Williams knocked down her third three-pointer of the third period with 1:41 remaining to give the Sharks a 40-35 lead, then Linnin drove into the paint and converted to make it a one-possession game.
Mead rattled home a three from the left corner with just under a minute remaining in the third to make it 43-37 in favor of the Sharks heading into the final quarter.
Mead knocked down another three with 7:59 left in the fourth, then Legions scored in the paint at the 6:55 mark to extend LIU's lead to 11.
The Dolphins scored their first basket of the fourth with 5:44 on the clock as Florvil grabbed an offensive rebound and scored a layup in transition at the other end.
Two free throws from
Brianna Williams (Brampton, Ontario/Southwest Academy/Hartford) with 5:00 left in the contest cut Le Moyne's deficit to 48-41, but Williams made another three less than a minute later to push the LIU lead back to 10.
Linnin responded with a three during the ensuing Le Moyne possession.
Williams and Mead knocked down back-to-back threes at the 2:56 and 2:08 marks in the fourth to make it 59-46.
The Le Moyne women's basketball team will embark on a two-game road swing to Pennsylvania next week, with a 6:00 p.m. NEC matchup at Mercyhurst on January 9, followed by a 4:00 p.m. game at Saint Francis on January 11.
