Syracuse, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College softball team fell to cross-town foe Syracuse University, 6-0, in their home-opener on Wednesday afternoon. The Dolphins overall record dropped to 8-19 with the loss.
After a quiet first inning, the Orange got on the board in the top of the second as a walk to Galipeau, infield single by Alves, and hit batter (Breen), Davison reached on a fielder's choice that saw the two leading runners cross the plate on a throwing error. Syracuse added one more run and took a 3-0 lead later in the inning as Taliaferro grounded out to short, scoring Breen on the play.
Following two straight 1-2-3 innings of offense from the Dolphins, Syracuse grabbed another pair of runs in the top of the fourth as Davison smacked a home run over the centerfield wall, bringing around Breen who was hit by a pitch earlier in the frame.
Le Moyne registered their lone hit of the afternoon in the bottom of the fifth inning as freshman third baseman Cianna Benamati (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) singled down the third base line. Despite junior pinch runner Alayna Bush (Adams, N.Y./South Jefferson) stealing both second and third in the inning, the Dolphins were unable to drive her in.
The Orange added their final run of the day in the top of the seventh as Lantier doubled to left to leadoff the inning before advancing to third and scoring on a throwing error two batters later.
The Dolphins couldn't get a rally going in the bottom of the inning and fell in shutout fashion to Syracuse.
Freshman starter Nevaeh Ross (Friendship, N.Y./Friendship) allowed five runs (four earned) on three hits and four walks while striking out three in four innings of work. Junior Rose Nicastro (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) allowed one run on one hit and one walk while striking out one in three innings of relief.
