BASEBALL BESTS NORFOLK STATE SUNDAY TO COMPLETE SERIES SWEEP

Norfolk, Va. – The Le Moyne College baseball team completed a series sweep at Norfolk State and improved to 7-2 in Northeast Conference play with a 14-9 win over the Spartans at NSU's Marty L. Miller Field on Sunday afternoon.

Le Moyne claimed both games of a doubleheader against Norfolk State on Saturday by scores of 6-5 and 9-7 to secure the series victory, then they scored a season-high 14 runs in the finale on Sunday to complete their second consecutive NEC sweep. The series was initially scheduled to be played in Syracuse, but inclement weather forced the two sides to move the series to Norfolk. Le Moyne remained the designated home team for all three contests.

Freshman infielder Tim Denet (West Harrison, N.Y./Iona Prep) and junior outfielder Tyler Campbell (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Onondaga C.C.) each launched a two-run home run during the win, while sophomore infielder Ethan Farina (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa/Saint Rose) drove in a team-high three runs with a team-high three hits, including a double, to go along with a walk, two runs and a stolen base.

Senior infielder Benji Ries (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) registered two hits, one walk and one RBI, while sophomore infielder Mike Whelehan (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) added a double, a walk, two runs, an RBI and a stolen base.

Right fielder Justin Journette drove in a game-high four runs for the Spartans during the setback with the help of a two-run home run, while Robert Beatty tallied two hits, two runs, and two RBIs with a solo home run.

Senior left-handed pitcher Jacob Crystal (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) made his third start of the season on the mound for the Dolphins, limiting the Spartans to two runs in 5.0 innings of work.

Junior right-hander Luke Connors (Brampton, Ontario/Heart Lake/Monroe Community College) tossed 2.0 innings in relief with one hit, one run allowed and two strikeouts.

Redshirt-senior right-hander Billy Hoffacker (Erial, N.J./Timber Creek/Rowan College of South Jersey) improved his record to 2-0 this season after holding the Spartans to two hits, one run and zero walks with three strikeouts in the final 1.2 innings.

Le Moyne opened up an early 4-0 lead on Sunday, as Ries and senior outfielder Wyatt Patchett (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) both drove in a run in the bottom of the first, then Campbell lifted a two-run shot over the right field wall in the bottom of the second.

NSU got two runs back in the top of the third following a two-RBI single through the left side from Journette.

Denet delivered his two-run home run over the right field wall in the fifth, scoring Campbell, then Farina drove in Whelehan and junior center fielder Paulie Goodness (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon/Finger Lakes Community College) with a double down the left field line in the sixth to make it 8-2 in favor of the Dolphins.

Beatty's solo home run to lead off the top of the seventh cut NSU's deficit to five runs.

Le Moyne got the run back in the bottom of the frame as Farina drove in sophomore catcher Cooper Romich (North Chili, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) with a bases-loaded walk.

Norfolk State came storming back in the top of the eighth, recording six runs to tie the contest at 9-9.

Journette smashed a two-run home run, second baseman Emmett Jefferson drove in a run with a double, Beatty delivered an RBI single, and catcher Brendan Burke recorded a two-out, two-run home run to tie the game.

In the bottom of the eighth, Denet, Ries, Patchett and Romich drew four consecutive one-out walks to put the Dolphins back in front, 10-9.

Patchett and redshirt-sophomore James Musso (Auburn, N.Y./Skaneateles) both crossed the plate later in the inning with the help of an RBI fielder's choice from Whelehan, then Goodness and Whelehan both scored unearned runs with two outs following a fly ball from Farina.

Hoffacker worked around a leadoff single in the top of the ninth to deliver a scoreless frame and close out the win for the Dolphins.

The Le Moyne baseball team will play its first series at Dick Rockwell Field next weekend when they host Wagner College for an NEC series beginning on Friday, April 4 at 3:00 p.m.
