Syracuse, N.Y. – The Delaware State University Hornets avoided a sweep against the Le Moyne College baseball team with a 5-4 win over the Dolphins on Sunday at Dick Rockwell Field.
Graduate outfielder Brady Daniels, junior infielder Jabril Bullock and redshirt-freshman Justin Batts recorded one run and one RBI each for the Hornets, junior right-handed starting pitcher Nathan Vidmar earned the win on the mound after tossing 7.1 innings with four runs allowed, and freshman outfielder/right-handed pitcher Brandon Boyd collected his first career save after tossing 1.2 scoreless innings in relief.
Delaware State scored one run in each of the first three innings. Le Moyne senior outfielder
Wyatt Patchett (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) launched a two-run home run, his fifth of the season and the 30
th of his career, in the bottom of the second inning.
Sophomore outfielder
Jack Cannon (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) delivered a big two-out, two RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the fourth to drive in junior infielder
Adam Sullivan (Syracuse, N.Y./Marcellus) and freshman infielder
Dominick Russ (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) and put the 'Phins in front, 4-3.
The Hornets responded with two unearned runs in the top of the fifth to take back the lead.
Vidmar allowed just one base runner in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
Le Moyne put runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but Boyd got a strikeout to strand both runners on base and close out the conference victory for the Hornets.
Junior left-handed pitcher
Colin Skermont (Yorkville, N.Y./Whitesboro/Herkimer) delivered a great relief outing for the Dolphins, limiting DSU to two hits, one walk and zero runs with four strikeouts over the final 4.1 innings.
Le Moyne won the first two games of the series by scores of 11-1 and 6-4 to register the series victory. The Dolphins will return to action on Tuesday when they host Niagara University for a 3:00 p.m. non-conference matchup at Dick Rockwell Field.
