West Windsor, N.J. – The fifth-seeded Le Moyne College women's tennis team fell to the fourth-seeded and defending champion LIU Sharks by a score of 4-2 in the opening round of the NEC Championships on Thursday at the Mercer County Tennis Center.
Le Moyne won two of the three doubles matches to claim the first point of the day, but LIU bounced back with four singles victories to earn the postseason win and advance to the tournament semifinals where they will meet top-seeded FDU on Friday.
Juniors
Stella Simeonova (Sofia, Bulgaria/National Gymnasium of Mathematics and Natural Sciences) and
Alicia Alvarez (Madrid, Spain/IES Ortega y Gasset) defeated Ksenia Reznitskaya and Fernanda Mueller in No. 2 double by a score of 6-4, while senior
Isabella Barona (Manta, Ecuador/Talentos de Manta) and junior
Paula Casares (A Coruna, Spain/Colegio Maristas Cristo Rey) claimed a 6-3 win over Jenna Svatos and Clara Tardivel in the third position.
Mia Tsoukalas and Lucia Garrigues bested sophomore
Ella Fernando (Manchester, England/Stonyhurst College) and graduate
Feriel Mahbouli (Tunisl, Tunisia/Lycee 36/South Carolina State) in No. 1 doubles by a score of 6-1.
Fernando registered Le Moyne's lone singles victory with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Reznitskaya in the second position.
Garrigues defeated Mahbouli in the first spot by a score of 6-3, 6-3, while Tsoukalas recorded a 6-1, 6-2 win over Casares in No. 3 singles. Tardivel registered a 6-2, 6-2 win over Barona in the fourth position, and Alvarez fell to Svatos in the sixth position, 2-6, 1-6.
The Le Moyne College women's tennis team concludes the 2024-25 season with a 9-10 record, including 4-4 against NEC competition in the regular season and 6-5 at home.
