West Windsor, N.J. – Seventh-seeded Wagner College upset second-seeded Le Moyne College in the opening round of the Northeast Conference Men's Tennis Championship on Thursday at the Mercer County Tennis Center.
The Seahawks took the lead by claiming the point in the doubles competition. Freshmen
Luke Hoyland (Sheffield, England/Birkdale School) and
Lorenzo Bortolaso (Bassano del Grappa, Italy/IT IS Enrico Fermi) gave the Dolphins the lead with a 6-2 win at the second spot over Eddie Schmidt and Pablo Rodriguez Gonzalez. Damian Janiszewski and Antoine Nivault evened doubles at one apiece with a 6-3 victory at the third position over graduate student
Bernardo Teixeira (Porto, Portugal/Escola Secundária Fontes Pereira de Mel/University of Porto/Delaware) and freshman
Jacob Maravillas (Bergenfield, N.J./Homeschooled). Carlos Rodriguez Gonzalez and Gabriele Zugarelli rallied from a 4-0 deficit to upset the previously-unbeaten (13-0) duo of senior
Peter Hatton (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt/Club Med Academics/Army West Point) and junior
Adrian Daniel (Tel Aviv, Israel/Montana State), 6-4, at the top spot to clinch the point.
Hatton won his 15th straight match, 6-3, 6-4, over Carlos Rodriguez Gonzalez at the top spot to even the match at one apiece. Schmidt gave the lead back to the Seahawks with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Daniel at the second position. The Dolphins tied the match at two as Maravillas won by retirement at the fifth spot over Jordan Hunte after splitting the first two sets and leading the third, 7-5, 1-6, 1-0. Janiszewski regained the lead for Wagner with a 6-4, 6-2 win at the fourth position over Hoyland. Teixeira knotted the match at three apiece with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Pablo Rodriguez Gonzalez at the third spot. Nivault clinched the match for the Seahawks with a 7-6 (7-0), 6-3 win at the sixth position over freshman
