Syracuse, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College softball team wrapped up their season series against Mercyhurst University at home on Monday afternoon. The Dolphins came away with the series victory with a 4-1 win behind a pair of home runs and a complete game from junior starter Rose Nicastro (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas).
Following a pair of scoreless innings delivered by Nicastro, Le Moyne got on the board first and struck for three runs via a pair of homeruns in the bottom of the second. Junior first baseman Audrey Benderski (Spring Lake Park, Minn./Spring Lake Park) drove in herself and freshman third baseman Cianna Benamati (Ballston Lake, NY./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) with a two-run shot over the left field wall just before senior catcher Elaina Kassap (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) followed with her own solo homer down the right field line.
Senior right fielder Alyssa Dybacz (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) hit a career milestone in the inning as well, as her single up the middle made her just the 5th player in program history, and first since Kelly Schweikert in the 2010 season, to record 200 hits, 100 RBI, and 100 runs scored in their career. Dybacz is top-10 in all three categories in program history.
Mercyhurst cracked the scoreboard in the top of the third and cut their deficit to two runs as shortstop Eliza Reynolds drove in center fielder Shai Riemedio, who singled to second base earlier in the inning, with a double to left center.
The Dolphins jumped back out to a three run lead, 4-1, in their half of the fourth as senior second baseman Dominique Rinaldi (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) brought junior pinch runner Alayna Bush (Adams, N.Y./South Jefferson) home from third on a sac fly to center field.
Both offenses settled for the remainder of the game as the Dolphins held on and Nicastro finished out her first career complete game in the circle.
Her final line was seven innings with one run allowed on seven hits and one walk to earn the win.
Dybacz led the squad with a pair of hits and Benderski's two RBI were a team-high in the series-clinching victory.
