Syracuse, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College baseball team won both games of a doubleheader against Central Connecticut State University on Thursday at Dick Rockwell Field to secure a series win against the Blue Devils.
Le Moyne claimed a 15-5 win in seven innings in game one behind two home runs and four RBIs each from senior outfielder
Wyatt Patchett (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) and freshman infielder
Tim Denet (West Harrison, N.Y./Iona Prep) and seven strong innings on the mound from left-handed starting pitcher
Max Parker (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius).
The Dolphins prevailed in the nightcap by a score of 9-8 with the help of home runs from sophomore outfielder
Jack Cannon (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) and senior infielder
Benji Ries (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) and a great relief outing from left-handed pitcher
Jacob Crystal (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse), who limited the first-place Blue Devils two hits, zero walks and zero runs in the final 2.2 innings to maintain Le Moyne's one-run lead and collect his second save of the season.
Denet tallied a combined six hits, four runs and six RBIs during the doubleheader, and registered his first career multi-home run game during the 15-5 win.
With two home runs in game one, Patchett moved into third place on the program's all-time career home runs list, with 33 long balls as a Dolphin.
GAME ONE:
Central Connecticut State, which entered the day tied for first in the NEC Standings, struck first in the series opener as senior infielder Chris Brown drove in senior infielder Brady Short with a sacrifice fly to left field in the top of the first inning.
Denet tied the game with a solo home run in the bottom of the second, then junior outfielder
Paulie Goodness (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon/Finger Lakes C.C.) delivered a two-run triple later in the frame to give the Dolphins a 3-1 advantage.
A two-run home run from CCSU senior infielder Aidan Redahan, who leads all NEC players in hits and RBIs, tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the third.
Le Moyne tallied four runs in the bottom of the third via an RBI single from sophomore catcher
Cooper Romich (North Chili, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) and a three-run home run from Patchett.
CCSU got two runs back in the top of the fifth on a two-run home run from senior Jackson Haker.
Parker recorded a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the sixth, then Le Moyne put up six runs in the bottom of the inning. Patchett led off the frame with a solo home run to left field, junior infielder
Adam Sullivan (Syracuse, N.Y./Marcellus) drove in a run with a base hit to right-center field, then Denet smashed a three-run home run over the left field wall. Sophomore infielder
Ethan Farina (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa/Saint Rose) lifted a solo home run to left field during the next at bat to give the Dolphins three long balls in the inning.
Parker worked around a leadoff single in the top of the seventh with the help of a 4-6-3 inning-ending double play, then Le Moyne scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it 15-5 and end the contest via the run rule.
Parker's final start at Dick Rockwell Field marked the 55
th start of his career, which ranks second in program history and is one start shy of the program record set by Bobby Blevins, who started 56 games on the mound from 2004-2007.
Parker earned his 21
st career win on Thursday, which ranks seventh in program history, and he is second all-time in strikeouts with 286.
GAME TWO:
CCSU held a 5-2 lead midway through the fifth inning during the second half of the doubleheader, but the Dolphins put up six runs in the bottom of the fifth. A three-run home run from Cannon tied the game at 5-5, then Denet hammered a two-run triple to right field, and Romich lined a single to center field to make it 8-5.
A solo home run from Redahan in the top of the sixth cut the Blue Devils' deficit to two, but Ries responded with a solo home run of his own in the bottom of the inning.
CCSU senior outfielder Kyle Gordon launched his second two-run home run of the game in the top of the seventh to make it 9-8 in favor of the Dolphins.
Crystal then entered the game, and retired the next two batters to end the inning.
Following a leadoff single in the top of the eighth, the Dolphins spun a 6-4-3 double play to clear the bases, and Crystal got a groundout during the next at bat to maintain Le Moyne's one-run lead.
The Blue Devils put runners on first and second with two outs in the top of the ninth, but Crystal got a fly ball to end the contest and secure the win for the 'Phins.
Cannon finished game two with a team-high three RBIs, Sullivan and Denet both provided three hits, while Sullivan, sophomore infielder
Mike Whelehan (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) and Ries each scored two runs.
Le Moyne (20-27, 17-12 NEC) will play game three against the Blue Devils, their final game of the season, on Friday at 12:00 p.m.
The Dolphins will celebrate 'Senior Day' on the field 30 minutes prior to first pitch.
