Syracuse, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College women's volleyball team will return home to Ted Grant Court to host Canisius University (1-8) in their first one-off match outside of invitational play this season at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 17.
Matchup History:
The Golden Griffins currently hold a 2-0 all-time record against the Dolphins, with their prior matchups taking place in 1991 and 2024.Â
In the programs' most recent matchup coming in Syracuse on Aug. 30 last season as part of the 2024 Salt City Classic, Canisius came away with the victory, 25-20, 25-18, 25-13, in three sets. Current sophomore outside hitter Jordyn Hamlin (Manahawkin, N.J. / Southern Regional) led the 'Phins' offense with eight kills while senior setter Haley Gerken (Buffalo, N.Y. / Frontier) added a team-high 17 assists. Defensively, sophomore libero/DS Brooke Menke (St. Louis, M.O. / Visitation Academy) recorded nine digs while junior opposite hitter Branwyn Lupton (Napanee, O.N. / Napanee District Secondary School) led the way with a pair of blocks.
Le Moyne dropped the first matchup between the two programs, 0-3, in 1991 at Canisius.
'Phins Season:
Le Moyne currently sits with a 1-7 record through eight matches in 2025, having taken down Niagara (3-2) on Saturday, Aug. 30 before dropping their last six.
Following the Salt City Classic in which the Dolphins opened the season with their win over Niagara and losses at the hands of both Rider and Syracuse, the team traveled to Delaware to take part in a three-match set at the Blue Hen Invitational from Sept. 6-7. Le Moyne fell in their three matchups to Hampton (2-3), Virginia Tech (0-3), and host Delaware (0-3) before heading down the East Coast once again to Maryland this past weekend.Â
As part of the Navy invitational on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 12-13, the Dolphins dropped their first match to Gardner-Webb (0-3) before rounding out the weekend with a loss at the hands of Navy in similar three-set fashion.
Through eight matches, Hamlin leads the team with 101.5 points, 86 kills, and 12 service aces while adding six assists, 60 digs, and 5.0 blocks. Lupton sits behind with 72.5 points and 63 kills while leading the team on the defensive end with 18.0 blocks and adding 18 digs, as well. Gerkin has added a team-high 166 assists through eight matches, adding five kills, five service aces, 52 digs, and 5.0 blocks.Â
On defense, Menke leads the Dolphins with 83 digs to go along with a .907 reception percentage while freshman middle hitter Eiley Schneider (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) and senior middle hitter Nil Ezgi Tasdelen (Izmir, Turkey/Ugur Okullari) sit just behind Lupton with 13.0 and 12.0 blocks each, respectively.
A Look at the Competition:
Canisius University will arrive in Syracuse with a 1-8 record through nine matches this season. They're coming off a 2024 season in which they went 17-14 overall and 12-6 in conference play, eventually falling to #1 Fairfield in the semifinal round of the MAAC Tournament.
To kick off Head Coach Tom Hanna's fourth season with the program, the Golden Griffins went 1-3 in the YSU Invitational in late August, dropping matches to Duquesne and host Youngstown State while taking down fellow-NEC member Mercyhurst in five sets.
Since then, the team has gone 0-6 though a pair of three-match invitationals in early September. Canisius dropped matches to Syracuse (0-3), Cornell (1-3), and UAlbany (2-3) in the UAlbany Invitational from Sept. 5-6 before falling at the hands of Bucknell (1-3), Binghamton (0-3) and Mercyhurst (2-3) in their second meeting of the young season in the Bearcat Invitational from Sept. 12-13.
Through nine matches, senior middle blocker Bella Mosquera leads the team with 114.5 points and 90 kills while adding 11 service aces, three assists, 26 digs, and 23.0 blocks. Freshman outside hitter/libero Madi Cowan has also aided in the offensive attack, totaling 85.5 points and 81 kills with one service ace, seven assists, 49 digs, and 6.0 blocks. Senior setter Ella Bourque has been a force for the Golden Griffins, totaling a team-high 300 assists with 35.5 points, 24 kills, eight service aces, 56 digs, and 7.0 blocks.
Defensively, junior libero Brena Reynaga leads the team with 138 digs and 3.94 digs per set while adding 17 assists and eight service aces. Junior middle blocker Kalia Reisma has posted a team-best 24.0 blocks with 61.5 points, 49 kills, and 10 digs this season.
What's Next:
Le Moyne will take part in the Syracuse Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 19-20 with their first matchup against St. John's coming across town at neutral Syracuse University at 2:00 p.m. on Friday. Their second matchup against Siena will take place at home on Ted Grant Court at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday.
