Youngstown, Ohio – The Le Moyne College men's tennis opened the Spring season with a 6-1 setback at Youngstown State University on Friday night at the YSU Indoor Tennis Center.
The Penguins opened the match by sweeping the doubles competition. At the first position, Alex Maulouet and Rafael Le Fur recorded a 6-4 win over sophomore
Luke Hoyland (Sheffield, England/Birkdale School) and freshman
Gabriel Segubiense (Sugar Land, Texas/Clements). Matteo Ceradelli and Dominik Vonbank also tallied a 6-4 win at the second spot over freshman
Carlo Zucchini (Varese, Italy/European School of Varese) and sophomore
Navya Verma (Patiala, India/Apollo Public School). Malo Vernejoul and Oscar Gippet won the closest match of the evening over sophomores
Callum Matthew (Dorset, England/Highcliffe School) and
Lorenzo Bortolaso (Bassano del Grappa, Italy/IT IS Enrico Fermi), 7-6 (7-2).
Youngstown State won the final five matches of the singles competition to close out the victory. Zucchini earned Le Moyne's point by rallying for a 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-8) victory over Maulouet at the top spot. Ceradelli downed Matthew at the second position, 6-1, 6-4. Vernejoul edged Hoyland, 7-6 (7-3), 5-7, 1-0 (10-2), at the third spot. Le Fur was a 6-3, 6-2 winner at the fourth position over Verma. Gippet tallied a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Bortolaso at the fifth spot. Alex Woiten turned in a 6-2, 6-1 win at the sixth position over Segubiense.
Le Moyne returns to the courts on Saturday, February 7 for its first NEC match of the campaign at Saint Francis University at Ebensburg Tennis Center in Ebensburg, Pa.
