DOLPHINS NARROWLY LOSE HOME OPENER TO NEW HAVEN

Syracuse N.Y. — The Le Moyne volleyball team lost 3-1 against the New Haven Chargers Friday night in the season home opener. The Chargers took the match, 29-27, 23-25, 27-25 and 25-17.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The first set was a nail biter. Both squads traded points for the entirety of the set, as neither side was able to get a foothold. The Chargers eventually broke away, leading 22-17 before the Dolphins went on a six point run to tie the set at 22-22. A series of back-and-forth points followed until New Haven narrowly pulled away with the set win, 29-27.

The second set saw the Dolphins go down 6-1 early but Le Moyne battled back. Despite getting within one of New Haven on multiple occasions, Le Moyne was unable to tie the set until the midway point, at 13-13. The Dolphins took their first lead of the set 18-17, before causing the Chargers to take a timeout as Le Moyne held their largest lead of the night, 20-18. A kill by Freshman Opposite Hitter Gabriella Schemidt (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield East), gave Le Moyne the final point to victory, a 25-23 set win.

Set three saw the Dolphins get off to a hot start, leading New Haven 7-4 in the opening frame of the set. Le Moyne kept their foot on the gas, leading for the entirety of the set until the Chargers tied the set up at 18-18. The Dolphins swiftly regained the lead, nearly winning before losing a series of game-winning points to failed challenges. New Haven capitalized, winning the set 27-25.

The Chargers took the momentum into the fourth set, going on a series of early runs. New Haven dominated the early and mid-game, keeping Le Moyne on the back foot for the majority of the set. The Dolphins fell 25-17 to lose the set, and the match.

Freshman Opposite Hitter Gabriella Schemidt (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield East) led the team in kills with 15 while junior setter Skylar Jehlen (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) distributed 23 assists.

Le Moyne is back in action on Saturday at home as the Dolphins close the weekend against New Haven University at 1:00 p.m.
