Stephenville, Texas — The Le Moyne College baseball dropped the final game of its series with Tarleton State on Sunday afternoon at TSU Baseball Complex, 13-8.
Junior left fielder
Chaz Anthony (
Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) and freshman second baseman
Isaac Brozon (
Aurora, N.Y. Southern Cayuga) each had a run batted in and scored a run and sophomore first baseman
Dominick Russ (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) added a solo shot for the Dolphins' first home run of the season in the setback.
Senior southpaw
Colin Skermont (
Yorkville, N.Y./Whitesboro/Herkimer College) started on the mound for Le Moyne, striking out two batters and allowing four runs, two of which were earned, and recording the loss. Senior right-hander
Luke Connors (
Brampton, Ontario Heart Lake Monroe Community College) was the final of three relief pitchers for Le Moyne and pitched a scoreless 1.1 innings of work.
Two walks and a bunt single loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the first inning for the Texans, and catcher Sergio Guerra hammered a two-run scoring double down the left field line to put Tarleton State ahead 2-0. Skermont struck out the next two batters to limit the damage.
Junior right fielder
Jack Cannon (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) led off the top of the second with a double down the right field line for the Dolphins' first hit of the game.
The Texans loaded the bases with one out again in the bottom of the third inning, and centerfielder Jake Tatom hit into a fielder's choice for an out at second base, but the ball was thrown away on the relay to first which allowed two runs to score, extending the Tarleton State lead to 4-0.
Cannon singled to left field with one out in the top of the fourth inning for his second hit of the game, and later stole second base. Senior third baseman
Adam Sullivan (
Syracuse, N.Y./Marcellus) worked a four pitch walk to put runners on first and second, and Anthony singled up the middle to score Cannon from second. A fielding error by the shortstop allowed junior catcher
Cooper Romich (
North Chili, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) to reach and brought another run home, cutting the Texans lead to 4-2.
The Texans loaded the bases with no outs to begin the bottom of the fourth, and first baseman Cage McCloud singled up the middle to push a run across. Guerra hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score a second run in the inning, and a sacrifice bunt by shortstop Ike Shirey allowed another runner to score to give the Texans a 7-2 lead.
Tarleton State loaded the bases again to open the bottom of the fifth inning, and a sacrifice fly by designated hitter Brady Englett allowed the runner to score from third base. McCloud followed with a single to right field to score another run and make it a 9-2 Texans lead.
Sullivan led off the top of the sixth inning with a double down the left field line, and sophomore designated hitter
Robert Wegrzyn (
North Tonawanda, N.Y./Niagara-Wheatfield) followed with a single to put runners on the corners with no outs. Anthony grounded into a double play to shortstop, but Sullivan scored from third to make the score 9-3 Tarleton State.
Russ crushed one over the right field wall with one out in the top of the seventh for the Dolphins first home run of the season, and cut the deficit to 9-4.
Englett hit a double down the right field line to score a runner from first to open the bottom of the seventh inning. The next batter struck out before Guerra smacked a two-run homer over the right field wall to increase the Texans lead to 12-4. They pushed another run across later in the inning on an RBI single by third baseman Raphaël Smeenk.
A single by Wegrzyn and back-to-back walks by Anthony and Romich loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the eighth inning for the Dolphins, and Brozon knocked a two-run double into right field to make the score 13-6. Junior shortstop
Mike Whelehan (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) followed with a ground out to short which scored Romich and advanced Brozon to third, and Brozon then scored on a wild pitch in the next at bat to make it 13-8 Texans.
Sullivan worked a walk with one out in the top of the ninth inning, but Hardin got Wegrzyn to ground into a double play and secured the victory for the Texans, 13-8.
Le Moyne will return to action on Friday at James Madison University at 3:00 p.m.
