DeWitt, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College women's tennis team fell to the University of Massachusetts in its home opener on Sunday night at Elevate Fitness.
The Minutewomen won both matches to finish to earn the point in the doubles competition. Ella Faessler and Renata Farima recorded a 6-0 win at the first position over juniors
Ella Fernando (Manchester, England/Stonyhurst College) and
Lilia Raiss (Temara, Morocco/Descartes). Martina Pavissich and Madara Markevica clinched the point with a 6-1 win over seniors
Emma Sanchez Jimenez (Marbella, Spain/Victoria Kent Marbella/Eastern Florida State College/Carson-Newman) and
Paula Casares (A Coruna, Spain/Colegio Maristas Cristo Rey) at the third spot. Amelia Tye and Amanda de Oliveira were leading seniors
Stella Simeonova (Sofia, Bulgaria/National Gymnasium of Mathematics and Natural Sciences) and
Alicia Alvarez (Madrid, Spain/IES Ortega y Gasset) 4-2 at the second position when the point was clinched.
UMass claimed the first three matches to finish in the singles competition to clinch the victory. At the first position, Tye recorded back-to-back scores of 6-1 to down Sanchez Jimenez. Pavissich registered a 6-0, 6-2 win at the second spot over Fernando. Markevica clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Simeonova at the third position. Fiona Ao was leading Casares at the fourth spot, 4-1, when the match was clinched. The fifth and sixth spots had not started when the match was clinched.
Le Moyne (0-3) returns to action on Saturday, February 21 at Siena University at 6:15 p.m. at Tri-City Fitness in Latham, N.Y.
