Syracuse, N.Y. – Graduate student attacker
Francesca Tortora (Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse/Stony Brook) registered a career-high six points to lead the Le Moyne College women's lacrosse team to an 11-9 come-from-behind victory over Stonehill College in the NEC opener for both teams on Saturday morning.
Stonehill scored the game's first four goals over the initial 10 and one-half minutes. Sophia Gouveia started the scoring at the 12:43 mark with her 16th goal of the season after taking a pass from Natalie Coutu. Just 1:36 later, Coutu picked up another assist on a tally by Taylor Green. Following three and one-half minutes of scoreless play, Green scored her 11th goal of the campaign after taking a pass from Meaghan Fealy. Coutu capped the stretch by converting a free-position shot with 4:21 to go.
Tortora got the Dolphins on the scoreboard with 1:08 remaining in the quarter.
Each team scored four times in the second quarter. Junior midfielder
Maddi Barney (Lorraine, N.Y./South Jefferson) pulled the Dolphins within two at the 13:30 mark by finishing off a feed from Tortora. Coutu answered back 1:19 later by converting another free-position shot. Tortora kept the see-saw going with her 14th goal of the season with 10:53 remaining. Barney got Le Moyne within one with 9:08 left off a free-position shot in a player-down situation.
Stonehill countered with the next two goals to regain a three-goal lead. Grace Murphy found the back of the net with 5:47 left off a dish from Coutu. Following two green cards on the Dolphins, Jennaveve Koch netted her seventh goal of the year with 4:06 left off a pass from Coutu.
Barney tallied her third goal of the half with 2:53 to go after receiving a pass from Tortora.
Murphy completed the scoring in the half with 2:21 left to give the Skyhawks an 8-5 lead at halftime.
Le Moyne scored the only three goals of the third quarter to knot the score at eight apiece. Sophomore midfielder
Emily Markovina (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) started the streak with 12:31 left with her sixth goal of the campaign off a feed from Tortora. Senior attacker
Bella Sampo (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) followed at the 9:52 mark with her fourth tally of the season. Senior attacker
Alexa Strelick (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) evened the score at eight apiece with 6:04 remaining with her seventh marker of the year.
The teams traded turnovers for the next five minutes before Barney put a shot on goal, but it was saved.
Barney extended Le Moyne's run to four straight goals with the first of the fourth quarter at the 13:02 after taking a pass from fellow junior midfielder
Julia Blakeslee (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca), who was lined up for a free-position attempt.
Murphy snapped Stonehill's scoring drought of 29:39 by netting her 25th goal of the season during an extra-player situation with 2:42 left to tie the score at nine.
Tortora gave the lead back to the Dolphins just 40 seconds later with her 15th tally of the year from just off the crease on the left side. Sophomore attacker
Mackenzie Prentice (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) added an insurance goal off a pass from Strelick just before the possession clock expired with 13.8 seconds left in the game for her fifth marker of the campaign.
Junior goalkeeper
Amanda Manfredi (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) registered six saves to earn her sixth victory of the season between the pipes. Nina Tremonte turned away 11 shots in the setback.
Le Moyne (6-2, 1-0 NEC) plays its first NEC road game of the season next Saturday at Howard University at 12:00 p.m.
