WAGNER CLOSES OUT SERIES WITH 9-7 WIN OVER BASEBALL

Augusta, N.J. —  The Le Moyne College baseball team dropped the final game of a three-game set with Wagner on Sunday afternoon at Skylands Stadium, 9-7.
 
Six different players drove in runs for the Seahawks, led by centerfielder Jackson Blakely, who drove in three runs on three hits, including a home run, and stole one base. Right fielder Lukas Torres also recorded three hits, including a double, reached on a hit by pitch and stole one base. Designated hitter Matt Sutera recorded two singles and stole one base. First baseman Joseph Mennella drove in one run on one hit, walked twice and stole one base, and second baseman Dylan Immel also drove in one run on a sacrifice fly, recorded a single and walked once. 
 
Right-handed pitcher Justin Roitman made the start for the Seahawks, allowing four runs, only one of which was earned, and striking out four batters in 3.1 innings of work. Right-hander Frankie Nardo was the first of three relief pitchers for Wanger, striking out one, allowing zero runs and earning the victory in 3.0 innings of work.
 
Eight different players recorded at least one hit for the Dolphins, led by sophomore designated hitter Robert Wegrzyn (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Niagara-Wheatfield) who drove in two runs on two hits. Junior catcher Cooper Romich (North Chili, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) also drove in two runs and recorded one hit. Junior right fielder Jack Cannon (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) recorded a team-high four hits and stole one base and junior third baseman Ethan Farina (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa/Saint Rose) and sophomore first baseman Landen Duprey (Morrisonville, N.Y. Peru) each added a double.
 
Redshirt sophomore left-hander Max Danaher (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) made the start for Le Moyne, pitching 2.2 innings of work, striking out one batter and recording the loss. Freshman right-hander Jack Molini (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) entered in relief of Danaher, striking out four batters and allowing one run in 3.1 innings of work. Redshirt sophomore Eric Swienecicki (Lancaster, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) was the final reliever for the Dolphins, striking out two batters and allowing one run in 2.0 innings on the mound. 
 
Senior center fielder Paulie Goodness (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon/Finger Lakes Community College) led off the game with a single and advanced to second base on a failed pick off attempt. The next batter was retired before Cannon singled to put runners on first and third with one out. Cannon then stole second base and an error on the throw to second allowed Goodness to advance home to give Le Moyne a 1-0 lead. Romich then reached base on an error and Cannon came around to score to make it 2-0. Romich then moved to second base on a failed pickoff attempt and reached third on a ground out. Wegrzyn followed with an RBI single through the left side to make it 3-0.
 
Torres doubled to lead off the bottom of the first inning. Sutera followed with a single and stole second to put runners on second and third. The next batter flied out before Mennella grounded out to score Torres and make it 3-1. Immel then singled up the middle to score Sutera and make it 3-2.
 
Left fielder Diego Tavarez singled and Mennella walked to begin the bottom of the third. The next batter grounded out to advance the runners one base and a ground out by third baseman Omar Carreras scored Tavarez and tied the game at 3-3. Shortstop Nicholas Mazzotta followed with an RBI double down the left field line to put Wagner ahead 4-3. Catcher Brendan McLoughlin was then hit by a pitch and Blakely followed with a three-run homer over the left field wall to make it 7-3.
 
Farina led off the top of the fourth inning with a double and advanced to third on a balk. The next batter struck out before Whelehan hit an RBI single through the left side to make it 7-4.
 
Torres and Sutera singled to begin the bottom of the sixth inning. The next batter grounded into a double play, but Torres was able to advance to third base. Torres later scored on a wild pitch to make it 8-4.
 
Swiencicki began the top bottom of the seventh inning on the mound in relief of Molini. The first two batters were retired before Blakely singled and Torres reached on a wild pitch. The runners advanced to second and third on a wild pitch, but Swiencicki struck out the next batter to end the frame.
 
Mennella hit a one-out single in the bottom of the eighth and Jayden Alavarez brought him home on an RBI double to make it 9-4.
 
Mazzotta moved from shortstop to the mound to pitch the top of the ninth inning. Goodness was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Freshman left fielder Isaac Brozon (Aurora, N.Y./Southern Cayuga) walked and Cannon singled to load the bases with no outs. Romich then grounded out to score Goodness and Sullivan lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to score Brozon and make it 9-6. Cannon advanced to third on a wild pitch before Wegrzyn hit an RBI single through the left side to make it 9-7. Mazzotta retired the final batter of the game to secure a 9-7 victory and the series sweep for Wagner.
 
Le Moyne will return to action on Tuesday at Binghamton University at 3:00 p.m.
