Syracuse, N.Y. — The Le Moyne College baseball team split a doubleheader with Coppin State on Sunday afternoon at Dick Rockwell Field. The Eagles claimed a 16-9 victory in game one before the Dolphins responded with a win in game two to secure the series victory, 10-6.
Game One:
Seven different players drove in runs for the Eagles, led by third baseman Kenan Harvey, who drove in three runs on two hits and walked once. Designated hitter Nelson Grajales added three runs batted in on a home run and catcher Armando Hurtado also homered, drove in two runs and walked once. Right fielder Terrell Milliner drove in two runs on one hit and walked twice, and first baseman Angel Garcia drove in one run on one hit and walked three times.
Right-hander Dillon Kirksey made the start for Coppin State, allowing eight runs, five of which were earned, striking out five batters and earning the win in 6.1 innings of work. Right-hander Justin Ritz finished the final 2.2 innings on the mound, allowing one run and striking out one batter.
Freshman left fielder
Isaac Brozon (
Aurora, N.Y. Southern Cayuga) led the Dolphins with two RBIs on two hits and two stolen bases. Sophomore catcher/first baseman
Robert Wegrzyn (
North Tonawanda, N.Y./Niagara-Wheatfield) hit a solo home run and senior shortstop
Adam Sullivan (
Syracuse, N.Y./Marcellus) drove in two runs on one hit and walked once. Junior right fielder
Jack Cannon (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) added three hits and three stolen bases.
Freshman right-hander
Luke VanMarter (
Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) made the start for Le Moyne, pitching 3.1 innings of work, striking out one and recording the loss. Freshman right-hander
Landon Cook (Minoa, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) was the last of four relievers for the Dolphins, striking out one batter in two scoreless frames.
Hurtado drilled a two-out solo homer to right center in the top of the first inning to give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead. Garcia singled and Harvey walked before Grajales lifted a three-run homer over the left field wall to make it 4-0.
Senior center fielder
Paulie Goodness (
Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon Finger Lakes Community College) led off the bottom of the first with a walk. He then stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error before scoring on a wild pitch to make it 4-1.
Three walks loaded the bases with one out in the top of the second for Coppin State and an RBI walk by Garcia made it 5-1.
Wegrzyn led off the bottom of the second with a solo home run over the right field wall, his third of the season, to make it 5-2.
Second baseman Jordan Treadwell hit a one-out single in the top of the third and Milliner lined an RBI single to right field to make it 6-2.
Cannon reached on a one-out bunt single in the bottom of the third inning. He reached third on consecutive stolen bases and scored on an RBI groundout by Sullivan to make it 6-3.
The Eagles loaded the bases with one-out in the top of the fourth inning. Sophomore right-hander
Michael Pastrana (Montgomery, Ala./Homeschooled) entered in relief and recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the frame scoreless.
Shortstop Marcus Sanders was hit by a pitch and Milliner walked to put runners on first and second with one out in the top of the fifth. A wild pitch allowed Milliner to advance to second and Sanders came around to score to make it 7-3. Center fielder Noah Hogan then walked and each runner advanced one base on a wild pitch before left fielder Pedro Agosto hit a two-run single up the middle to make it 9-3. Hurtado then reached on a fielding error and a flyout moved the runners to second and third base. Harvey then hit an infield single to score Agosto and make it a 10-3 game.
Junior third baseman
Ethan Farina (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa/Saint Rose) singled and reached third base on a fielding error to lead off the bottom of the fifth. Brozon singled to left field to drive in Farina and stole second base before Cannon lined an RBI single to left field to make it 10-5.
Two hit batters and a single loaded the bases to begin the top of the seventh for Coppin State and a sacrifice fly to center field by Hurtado made it 11-5. Garcia walked to reload the bases and Harvey followed with a two-run single down the right field line to make it 13-5. Treadwell then hit an RBI single up the middle to make it 14-5. The bases were loaded again following a walk by Sanders and a hit-by-pitch to Milliner forced in another run. Treadwell then came across on a wild pitch to give the Eagles a 16-5 lead.
Singles by Farina and Brozon put runners on first and third with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Brozon then stole second base and an error on the throw down allowed both runners to score and make it 16-7. Cannon and Sullivan each singled and both runners moved up one base on an executed double steal. Junior catcher/first baseman
Cooper Romich (
North Chili, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) then lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to make it 16-8.
Goodness led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a single and moved to third on consecutive stolen bases before Brozon brought him home on an RBI groundout. Ritz retired the next two batters to secure the 16-9 victory for Coppin State.
Game Two:
Seven different players drove in runs for the Dolphins, led by sophomore designated hitter
Derek Diaz (White Plains, N.Y./Iona Prep), who recorded two hits, including a home run, drove in three runs and stole one base. Cannon and Brozon each had an RBI on two hits, while Cannon added two stolen bases. Goodness recorded an RBI triple, walked once, reached on a hit-by-pitch and stole two bases.
Freshman right-hander
Jack Molini (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) made the start for Le Moyne, allowing two runs, none of which were earned, and striking out three batters in 3.2 innings of work. Senior right-hander
Luke Connors (
Brampton, Ontario/Heart Lake/Monroe Community College) pitched in relief of Molini, striking out three batters, allowing one run and earning the victory in 4.1 innings of work. Redshirt sophomore right-hander
Eric Swiencicki (
Lancaster, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) completed the final inning on the mound.
Diaz lifted a one-out solo homer to right center in the bottom of the second inning, his second of the season, to put the Dolphins ahead 1-0.
Harvey and Grajales walked to begin the top of the fourth inning and both runners moved up one base on a groundout. Milliner then reached base on a dropped fly ball in the infield and Harvey scored on the play to tie the game at 1-1. Hogan followed with an RBI single to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead.
Wegrzyn was hit by a pitch to begin the bottom of the fourth and he advanced to second on a wild pitch. The next two batters were retired before Romich hit an RBI double to right center to tie the game at 2-2.
Garcia hit a solo home run down the left field line in the top of the fifth inning to make it 3-2.
The Dolphins took the lead for good with five runs on two hits and three Coppin State errors in the bottom of the fifth. Farina walked and Goodness was hit by a pitch to begin the inning. Brozon advanced the runners on a sacrifice bunt and Cannon reached base on a fielding error, which allowed Farina to score and tie the game at 3-3. Cannon then stole second base and the throw down allowed Goodness to score and put the Dolphins ahead 4-3. Wegrzyn then reached on a fielding error and moved to second on a stolen base. Sullivan followed with an RBI single to center field and stole second base before Diaz pulled a two-run single down the left field line to make it 7-3.
Junior second baseman
Mike Whelehan (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) began the bottom of the eighth inning with a single, and Goodness hit an RBI triple down the right field line to make it 8-3. Brozon followed with an RBI infield single to make it 9-3. Cannon then singled to put runners on the corners, and Wegrzyn followed with a single to left center to score Brozon and make it 10-3.
Swiencicki came in to pitch the top of the ninth inning for Le Moyne. A single and two walks loaded the bases with two outs for the Eagles, and a two-run single up the middle by Harvey made it 10-5. Grajales pushed another run across on an RBI single up the middle. Swiencicki got the final batter to ground out and secured the 10-6 win and series victory for Le Moyne.
Le Moyne will return to action on Tuesday at Canisius University at 3:00 p.m.
