BASEBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH MERCYHURST

Syracuse, N.Y. — The Le Moyne College baseball team split a doubleheader with Mercyhurst on Saturday afternoon at Dick Rockwell Field. The Dolphins claimed an 11-4 victory in game one before the Lakers responded with a 7-5 win in game two.

Game One:
Five different players drove in runs for the Dolphins, led by sophomore catcher Robert Wegrzyn (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Niagara-Wheatfield), who recorded two hits, including a grand slam in the fifth inning, and walked twice. Senior shortstop Adam Sullivan (Syracuse, N.Y./Marcellus) drove in two runs on one hit and stole one base. Freshman left fielder Isaac Brozon (Aurora, N.Y. Southern Cayuga) recorded two hits, drove in one run and stole one base and senior center fielder Paulie Goodness (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon Finger Lakes Community College) and junior designated hitter Cooper Romich (North Chili, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) each drove in one run on one hit.

Redshirt junior right-handed pitcher AJ Petraitis (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) made the start for Le Moyne, pitching 5.0 innings of work, allowing four runs, three of which were earned, striking out seven batters and recording the win. Senior right-hander Luke Connors (Brampton, Ontario/Heart Lake/Monroe Community College) finished the final 4.0 innings on the mound, allowing no runs and striking out three batters to earn his second save of the season.

Second baseman Zachary Kourous got the scoring started in the top of the first inning with a two-run homer over the right field wall.

Goodness led off the bottom of the first with a single and later stole second base. Junior right fielder Jack Cannon (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) singled up the middle and stole second base to put runners on second and third with one out. Sullivan then lifted a sacrifice fly to left field that allowed Goodness to score and Cannon also scored on a throwing error to tie the game at 2-2.

Two walks and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases with one out for the Dolphins in the bottom of the second inning, and a sacrifice fly to center field by Goodness put Le Moyne in front 3-2.

Third baseman Logan Koslin led off the top of the fifth with a double and advanced to third base on a groundout. Kourous followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 3-3. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases for the Lakers and a wild pitch allowed Kourous to score and make it a 4-3 game.

The Dolphins began the bottom of the fifth with three straight walks and Wegrzyn followed with a grand slam to left field, his fourth home run of the season, to put the Dolphins ahead 7-3. Sophomore first baseman Derek Diaz (White Plains, N.Y./Iona Prep) then doubled down the right field line. Goodness reached on a fielding error later in the inning, allowing Diaz to advance to third base. A wild pitch then allowed Diaz to score and make it 8-4.

Brozon led off the bottom of the sixth with a single through the left side and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. The next two batters were retired before Romich lined an RBI single to right field to make it a 9-4 game.

Junior second baseman Mike Whelehan (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) walked to lead off the bottom of the seventh and reached second on a stolen base. The next two batters were retired before Brozon lined an RBI single to right center to make it 10-4. A single by Cannon put runners on the corners and a single by Sullivan down the left field line scored Brozon to make it 11-4.
