MEN’S TENNIS ADVANCES TO NEC SEMIFINALS FOR SECOND TIME IN THREE YEARS WITH 4-2 VICTORY OVER MERCYHURST

West Windsor, N.J. – The Le Moyne College men's tennis team became the first sixth seed to win a quarterfinal match in the NEC Championship in over 22 years with a 4-2 victory over third-seeded Mercyhurst University on Thursday afternoon at the Mercer County Tennis Center.

The Dolphins, who fell to the Lakers in the regular season on February 24, 4-3, advance to the semifinals for the second time, where they will take on second-seeded Wagner College on Friday at 12:00 p.m. In the quarterfinals of last year's championship, the seventh-seeded Seahawks upset the second-seeded Dolphins.

Le Moyne (5-9) took a 1-0 lead by winning the point in the doubles competition. Danylo Rekun and Lukas Cabue put the Lakers in front with a 7-5 win over sophomore Luke Hoyland (Sheffield, England/Birkdale School) and freshman Gabriel Segubiense (Sugar Land, Texas/Clements) at the second position. Freshman Carlo Zucchini (Varese, Italy/European School of Varese) and sophomore Navya Verma (Patiala, India/Apollo Public School) knotted the competition at one with a 7-6 (7-2) victory at the top spot over Petar Belosevic and Colm Schultz. Sophomore Callum Matthew (Dorset, England/Highcliffe School) and Lorenzo Bortolaso (Bassano del Grappa, Italy/IT IS Enrico Fermi) clinched the point by edging Nikola Radisic and David Mengher at the third position, 7-6 (7-5).

The Dolphins secured the victory by winning three of the five matches to finish in the singles competition. Segubiense gave the Dolphins a 2-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Mykhailo Polishchuck at the fifth position. Radisic got the Lakers on the board with a 7-5, 6-0 at the sixth spot over junior Yegor Boyev (London, England/Ashcroft Technology Academy). Schultz evened the match at two apiece by registering a 7-5, 7-6 (7-2) win at the fourth position against Bortolaso. Zucchini overcame a first set loss to defeat Rekun at the top spot, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, to put the Dolphins back in front. Matthew clinched the victory by rallying for a 1-6, 6-1, 7-5 victory at the second position over Cabue. Belosevic led Hoyland at the third spot, 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 5-4, when the match was decided.
