Brookville, N.Y. — The Le Moyne College baseball team earned a victory in game two of a three game series with Long Island University on Friday afternoon at LIU Baseball Stadium, 12-5.
Seven different players drove in runs for the Dolphins, led by senior shortstop
Adam Sullivan (
Syracuse, N.Y./Marcellus), who drove in three runs on three hits, including a home run, and walked once. Junior right fielder
Jack Cannon (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) also homered, drove in two runs on three hits and added a stolen base. Freshman third baseman
Isaac Brozon (
Aurora, N.Y./Southern Cayuga) had three hits, including a first inning solo shot for his first collegiate home run, drove in two runs and walked once. Sophomore first baseman
Robert Wegrzyn (
North Tonawanda, N.Y./Niagara-Wheatfield) added an RBI on two hits and reached on a hit-by-pitch.
Freshman right-hander
Luke VanMarter (
Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) made the start for Le Moyne, pitching 5.0 innings of work, allowing four runs, striking out a season-high six batters to earn his first collegiate win. Redshirt sophomore left-hander
Max Danaher (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) finished the final 4.0 innings on the mound, allowing one run and striking out two batters to collect his second career save.
Brozon lined a one-out home run over the left field wall in the top of the first to give the Dolphins an early 1-0 lead. Cannon followed with a single up the middle before Sullivan lifted a two-run homer over the left field wall, his third of the season, to make it 3-0.
Senior center fielder
Paulie Goodness (
Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon Finger Lakes Community College) lined a one-out single to right field in the top of the second, extending his hitting streak to 16 games. Brozon then doubled down the left field line to score Goodness and make it 4-0. Cannon followed with a two-run shot over the left field wall, his second home run of the season, to give Le Moyne a 6-0 lead.
Centerfielder Nick Matson and catcher Joseph Durso singled with one-out in the bottom of the second for the Sharks. A passed ball later in the inning allowed the runners to advance to second and third with two outs, but VanMarter struck out the next batter to end a scoreless frame.
Singles by Cannon and Sullivan and a hit-by-pitch to junior catcher
Cooper Romich (
North Chili, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) loaded the bases for the Dolphins with no outs in the top of the fourth. Wegrzyn was then hit by a pitch to force in a run to make it 7-0. A sacrifice fly to left field later in the inning by junior second baseman
Mike Whelehan (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) scored Sullivan to put Le Moyne ahead 8-0.
Goodness and Brozon singled to begin the top of the fifth inning, and an RBI single through the left side by Sullivan made it 9-0.
Three consecutive walks loaded the bases to begin the bottom of the sixth for LIU. Matson then powered a grand slam over the left field wall to make it a 9-4 game.
Wegrzyn singled to lead off the top of the eighth inning. A walk to sophomore designated hitter
Derek Diaz (White Plains, N.Y./Iona Prep) and a hit-by-pitch to Whelehan loaded the bases before freshman left fielder
Nick Kriegelstein (
Farmington, N.Y./Victor) lined an RBI single through the left side to make it 10-4. Diaz then scored on a fielder's choice by Goodness to make it 11-4. A wild pitch later in the inning allowed Whelehan to score and give Le Moyne a 12-4 lead.
Freshman Sam Finarelli lined a pinch-hit solo shot over the center field wall with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning for his first collegiate hit. Danaher got the final batter of the game to fly out to right field to secure the 12-5 win and series victory for Le Moyne, the team's first over the Sharks since joining the NEC.
Le Moyne and LIU will finish the series on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
