Syracuse, N.Y. — Junior right fielder
Jack Cannon (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) set a new single-season program stolen base record as the Le Moyne baseball team earned a 9-2 win in the rubber match of a three-game series with Stonehill College on Sunday afternoon at Dick Rockwell Field.
Six different players recorded RBIs for the Dolphins, led by senior shortstop
Adam Sullivan (
Syracuse, N.Y./Marcellus), who drove in three runs on two hits, including a double, and walked once. Cannon added an RBI on three hits, including a double, walked once and stole two bases. His two steals gave him 43 on the season, setting a new program single-season stolen base record, passing Kyle Brown ('04), who stole 42 bases in the 2004 campaign. Junior second baseman
Mike Whelehan (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) recorded a two-run single and walked once and junior designated hitter
Chaz Anthony (
Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) drove in one run on two hits and added a walk. Sophomore catcher
Robert Wegrzyn (
North Tonawanda, N.Y./Niagara-Wheatfield) recorded an RBI single and junior first baseman
Cooper Romich (
North Chili, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) added an RBI and walked once.
Freshman right-hander
Jack Molini (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) made the start for Le Moyne, pitching 5.1 innings of work, allowing two runs, striking out four batters and recording his fourth win of the season. Redshirt sophomore right-hander
Eric Swienecicki (
Lancaster, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) completed the final 3.2 innings on the mound, allowing zero runs, striking out four batters and earning his second save of the season.
Center fielder Sam Parks singled and third baseman Michael Rickert doubled to put runners on second and third with one out in the top of the first inning for the Skyhawks. A groundout by first baseman Nathan Kearney scored Parks to give Stonehill an early 1-0 lead.
Sullivan ripped an RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the first to score senior center fielder
Paulie Goodness (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon/Finger Lakes C.C.), who singled and stole second to open the inning, to tie the game at 1-1.
Goodness was hit by a pitch and Cannon walked to put runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the third inning. Both runners advanced on a double steal and Sullivan followed with an RBI double down the left field line to put the Dolphins ahead 2-1. A groundout by Romich scored Cannon and an RBI single through the left side by Wegrzyn made it a 4-1 game.
Rickert led off the top of the fourth with a single and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. A single down the right field line by designated hitter John Bureau scored Rickert to make it 4-2.
Freshman left fielder
Nick Kriegelstein (
Farmington, N.Y./Victor) led off the bottom of the fourth with a single. He advanced to second on a stolen base and later scored on an RBI single by Cannon to make it a 5-2 game. The RBI gave Cannon 54 on the season, which ties Randy Marshall from 1987 and Mike Afftonti from 2006 for the seventh-most in a season in the program's history.
Cannon reached on a bunt single to open the bottom of the seventh inning. He then moved to second base on his 43rd stolen base of the season, breaking the program's single-season record. Sullivan then walked, which tied Pat Kelly from 1979 for the sixth-most in a season in the program's history with his 36th. Romich then reached on a bunt single to load the bases with no outs. The next batter was retired before an RBI walk by Anthony forced in Cannon to make it 6-2. With the run, Cannon became the first Dolphin to score 50 times in a season since Brian Cox and Andrew Taft in 2018. Whelehan then lined a two-run single up the middle to give the Dolphins an 8-2 lead.
Cannon lined a one-out double into left field in the bottom of the eighth inning. Sullivan then sent a fly ball into deep left center field that was caught near the warning track. The defense had trouble getting the ball in, allowing Cannon to score all the way from second base and putting the Dolphins in front 9-2.
Swienecicki worked around a single to complete a scoreless top of the ninth inning, securing the 9-2 win and series victory for the Dolphins.
Le Moyne will return to action on Tuesday at Niagara University at 3:00 p.m.
