MEN’S TENNIS OPENS YEAR WITH 21 WINS AT BINGHAMTON CHAMPIONSHIPS

| Box Score 3 Binghamton, N.Y. – Third year Navya Verma (Patiala, India/Apollo Public School) won his flight to lead the Le Moyne College men's tennis team at the Binghamton Championships, which were held Friday through Sunday at the Lane-Starke Tennis Center.

Verma went 3-0 to win the "E" flight. He opened with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Stonehill's Joao Machado. In the semifinals, he posted a 2-6, 6-4, 10-5 win over Binghamton's Vonn Dudek. He captured the flight by defeating first year Justin Barrett (Kaohsiung, Taiwan/Liverpool (N.Y.)), 7-6, 4-6, 10-4.

Fourth year Emmanuel Cottle (Toronto, Ontario/Ontario Virtual School/Alcorn State) went 1-1 in the "A" flight. He opened with a 6-2, 7-6 win in the first round over Binghamton's Andre Ajed. He fell in the quarterfinals to Wagner's Nicola Bottelberghs, 6-4, 3-6, 13-11.

Third year Callum Matthew (Dorset, England/Highcliffe School) went 0-2 in the "A" flight. He fell in the first round to reigning NEC Player of the Year Eddie Schmidt, 7-5, 6-0. He fell in the consolation bracket to Stonehill's Guillermo Bennaton, 6-4, 7-5.

Second year Carlo Zucchini (Varese, Italy/European School of Varese) registered a 2-1 record in the "A" flight. He was defeated by Mercyhurst's Petar Belosevic, 6-2, 6-1, in the first round. He then downed Chicago State's Joao Teixeira, 6-3, 7-5, in the consolation bracket. He wrapped up the event with a 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 10-5 victory over Bennaton.

Fifth year Adrian Daniel (Tel Aviv, Israel/Tichonet/Montana State) dropped the only match he played in the "B" flight. In the quarterfinals, Radu Valentin Filipache from Binghamton posted a 5-7, 6-4, 11-9 victory.

Third year Luke Hoyland (Sheffield, England/Birkdale School) advanced to the finals in the "C" flight. He opened with a 6-4, 5-7, 10-8 victory over Binghamton's Ioannis Sakkas. He then recorded a 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 win in the semifinals over Stonehill's Hector Cebrian. Wagner's Joshua Zhao won the flight with a 6-4, 3-6, 11-9 victory.

Second year Gabriel Segubiense (Sugar Land, Texas/Clements) split his two matches in the "C" flight. He fell to Zhao in the quarterfinals, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6). He bounced back with a 6-1, 6-0 victory in the consolation bracket over FDU's Benjamin Wrann.

Third year Lorenzo Bortolaso (Bassano del Grappa, Italy/IT IS Enrico Fermi) advanced to the finals in the "D" flight. He was a 6-2, 6-3 winner in the quarterfinals over Chicago State's Stefan Djokovic. He rallied in the semifinals to defeat Stonehill's Nicolas Arredondo, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 10-4. FDU's Adavait Mantri claimed the flight with a 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-0 win.

Barrett went 2-1 in the "E" flight. He recorded a 6-3, 6-4 victory in the quarterfinals over Binghamton's Shashank Reddy Pennabadi. He advanced to the finals with back-to-back 6-4 wins over Stonehill's Rafael Brown. He then fell in the finals to Verma.

Fourth year Yegor Boyev (London, England/Ashcroft Technology Academy) went 2-1 in the "F" flight and advanced to the finals. He registered a 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 10-8 win in the quarterfinals over LIU's Jonathan Kurian. He then rallied for a 2-6, 6-2, 10-2 victory over Stonehill's Jacob Borch-Nielson in the semifinals. He fell to FDU's Vincenzo Marchese in the finals, 6-3, 6-0.

Bortolaso and Boyev swept their competition in the "C" flight. They opened with a 6-4 victory over Binghamton's Reddy Pennabadi and Vonn Dudek. They then posted a 6-2 win over Chicago State's Justin Atkins and Stefan Djokovic. They were walkover winners over Stonehill's Hayden Grech and Benjamin Beaudry in the finals.
 
Zucchini and Daniel advanced to the semifinals of the "A" flight. In the first round, they were 6-1 winners over Wagner's Vibhu Challagundla and Joshua Zhao. They then defeated Mercyhurst's Petar Belosevic and Mykhailo Polishchuck, 6-4, in the quarterfinals. Their run came to an end in the semifinals, where they fell to Wagner's Lukas Escher and Tyler Nguyen, 6-1.

Cottle and Segubiense went 2-1 in the "A" flight. They opened with a 6-4 victory over Stonehill's
Borch-Nielsen and Rafael Brown. After falling to Binghamton's Filipe Costa and Zihe Liao in the quarterfinals, 7-5, they defeated LIU's Victor Sjostrom and Jack Brimm in the consolation bracket, 6-2.

Hoyland and Matthew dropped both of their matches in the "A" flight. They fell to Sjostrom and Brimm in the first round, 7-5. Chicago State's Yurii Hoida and Joao Teixeira were 6-3 winners in the consolation bracket.

Barrett and Verma dropped the only match they played in the "B" flight. In the quarterfinals, LIU's Jonathan Kurian and Leo Lazarides won 6-4. Barrett and Verma won by walkover in the consolation bracket over FDU's Matias Neira and Arya Subaash Prabhu.
 
The Dolphins are back in action at the Colgate Invitational on Saturday and Sunday at the J. W. Abrahamson Tennis Courts in Hamilton.
