Volleyball opens NEC play this weekend at LIU

VOLLEYBALL TAKES ON LIU THIS WEEKEND

Syracuse, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College volleyball team heads to New York City for a two-game series against LIU this Friday and Saturday. The Dolphins take on the 4-7 Sharks at 6:00 p.m. on Friday and 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. 

Senior opposite/outside hitter Branwyn Lupton (Napanee, Ontario/Napanee District Secondary School) leads the team offensively with 50 kills. Junior middle hitter Alise Evans (Tampa, Florida/Oak Park/UNC Asheville) has 36 kills and a team-high 20 blocks. Freshman Katie Barbour (Durham, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) and junior Skylar Jehlen (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) have split the setting duties with 145 (4.26/set) and 69 assists (2.65/set) respectively. Senior Haley Buescher (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) leads the team defensively with 66 digs (2.75/set), while freshman Aubrey Kimball (Greensboro, N.C./Cornerstone Charter Academy) has 59 digs (2.27/set). 

The Dolphins are facing LIU for the fifth time in the program's history and have gone 0-4 over the past two seasons. 
 
The Sharks opened the season losing their first seven games of the season. This included a 3-0 loss at Michigan, at Michigan State, at Oregon and against Washington State. LIU then went to Rutgers and lost 3-1. At the Northwestern Invitational, LIU fell to Green Bay 3-1 and Northwestern 3-0. The Sharks went on to win their next four games, starting with the final game of the Northwestern Invitational, a 3-1 win over Virginia Tech. The next weekend, LIU swept the Butler Invitational with wins against Duke, 3-2, and Butler, 3-0. The Sharks most recent game, and win was at Saint Peter's with a 3-0 score. 

Sara van Gisteren leads the Sharks with 148 kills (3.89/set) on a .211 hitting percentage to go with 32 blocks (0.84/set). Bella Correia has tallied 83 kills (2.18/set) and eight blocks (.21/set). Mia Rojas-Avila has 64 kills (1.64/set) and 50 digs (1.32/set) and Yasmeen Muhammad has 56 kills (1.47/set). Dilara Elmacioglu directs the offense with 302 assists (8.16/set), while also contributing 82 digs (2.22/set). Sara van Gisteren leads the squad defensively with 94 digs (2.47/set).
