Scott Love enters his fourth season as the head men's and women's cross country coach in 2014 and his first as the head men's and women's track coach.
Love came to Le Moyne after spending nine years in charge of the men's and women's cross country and track and field programs at Nazareth College. Love started the programs at Nazareth in 2002 and has built the teams into contenders in the Empire 8 and at the national level. Love guided the Golden Flyers to third-place finishes at the Empire 8 meet each of the last two years on the women's side and to a pair of top-five finishes on the men's side. Individually, three members of his 2007 cross country teams qualified for the NCAA Championships, with one of the runners returning to the national meet the following year, earning All-America accolades. Academically, both the men's and women's programs have earned USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors for having a team grade-point average above 3.0, which the women's team has accomplished for 14 consecutive semesters.
"I am very excited to be joining Le Moyne College and look forward to be working once again in the Syracuse running community where I began my coaching career," said Love. "At the same time, I wish to express how much I appreciate the wonderful and unique opportunity I was given by Nazareth College to begin and establish a collegiate cross country and track and field program. I will deeply miss the many fine athletes I coached over the past nine years, as well as my teaching and coaching colleagues."
"We are excited about the addition of Coach Love to our department," said Bassett. "He provides a fabulous background of collegiate coaching experience and will help us continue to raise the profile of our cross country program."
Prior to his time at Nazareth, Love was the head men's and women's cross country coach at Onondaga Community College from 1999-2002. With the Lazers, Love coached an individual men's Midstates Conference champion and NJCAA All-Americans in 1999 and 2001.
While at OCC, Love also served as the head boy's and girl's indoor track coach and head boy's outdoor track coach at East Syracuse-Minoa High School. From 1998-2000, Love coached nine individual Section III champions, including five athletes that placed at the NYSPHSAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships. In the Fall of 1998, Love was the Onondaga Central Schools modified boy's and girl's cross country coach. He directed both squads to an undefeated record in dual meets.
Love gained his first collegiate coaching experience as an assistant coach at Syracuse University from 1994-1998. Along with supervising distance athletes for the men's and women's cross country and track program, Love's responsibilities included planning workouts, recruiting and monitoring academic progress of athletes. Several of his athletes set school records during his time with the Orange, including in the men's indoor and outdoor 800 meters and the men's and women's 4 x 800 relay squads, while he also coached individual and relay qualifiers at the IC4A (men) and ECAC (women) Championships. As a team, Love helped guide the Orange to the 1995 IC4A University Men's Cross Country Championship, the 1995 Men's and Women's Miami Greentree Cross Country Invitational Championships and the 1995 Western Ontario Invitational Championship. The Orange also received All-Academic team honors during his tenure.
Love started his coaching career as the head modified boy's cross country coach and assistant varsity boy's track coach at West Genesee from 1979-1981. The cross country teams went undefeated in dual meets under Love's direction.
Love then took over as the head girl's cross country and track coach at Paul V. Moore High School (Central Square) in 1982. His cross country squads went 102-6 over 13 years and combined with the track teams won 15 OHSL Conference championships. His teams twice placed fifth in the state cross country Federation Championships and garnered a fourth-place finish at the Eastern States Championships. He also coached individuals who qualified for the NYSPHSAA Championships, Junior Olympics and Foot Locker Championships.
Love earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in English (Creative Writing) from Syracuse University in 1977. He later earned a Master of Arts Degree in American Literature from Syracuse in 1982. In 1985, he received his New York State Permanent Teaching certification in Secondary Education, as well as receiving his New York State Coaching certification.
