2023: Freshman - In her first season with the Dolphins, Ples saw herself earn two top-10 finishes. In the opening meet of the year, the 2023 Frank Dillon Memorial Invitational (Sept. 2), Mackenzie competed in the 4k running a time of 16:13.2 and finishing 10th overall. Two weeks later, she would compete in the 2023 Yellowjacket XC Invitational (Sept. 16), where she would compete in the 6k, earning a time of 25:18.9 and finishing 107th overall. The following meet, the Dolphins headed to the Lehigh Paul Short Run (Sept. 30), competing in the 6k and running a time of 25:53.2. Ahead of the championships, Ples and the 'Phins traveled to Canisius to participate in the Canisius Alumni Classic (Oct. 14) . She would run in the 5k with a time of 20:05.7 and finishing 47th overall. At her first Northeast Conference Championship, Mackenzie ran the 5k in a time of 21:44.1 and finishing 56th overall. To wrap up her first season with the Dolphins, Ples and the Dolphins traveled to Loretto, Pa. to compete in the Saint Francis University Red Flash Rally, competing in the 4k where she earned a time of 16:48.7 and finishing 7th overall, her best placement of the season.
