SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Le
Moyne junior Ryan
Toth (
Massena, N.Y./
Massena) tossed a complete game no-hitter in the nightcap of a Dolphins doubleheader sweep of Cornell in baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Dick Rockwell Field. The Dolphins won the first game 6-1, and followed with a 2-0 triumph. Le
Moyne improved to 22-15 on the season, while the Big Red dropped to 17-22.
Toth became the first pitcher in 12 years to post a complete game no-hit effort for Le
Moyne. The last pitcher to achieve the feat was Scott Moody versus Siena on April 14, 1993.
Toth's no-hitter also marked the first time since March 20, 1999 that the Dolphins pitching staff no-hit an opponent, when Jaime Steward and Matt Elliott combined on a no-hitter at Monmouth.
Toth, making his first collegiate start, struck out six and walked only one in shutting down the Big Red. The junior
righthander faced only one over the minimum, yielding a one-out walk in the fourth inning to Brian Kaufman (Austin, Tex./St. Stephen's School).
Toth proceeded to retire the next 11 Cornell batters to end the game.
Toth needed only 92 pitches, 54 of which were strikes, to pick up his first win of the season.
Le
Moyne sophomore Ben
Gaal (
Manlius, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) provided all of the Dolphins offense in the second game, registering both of the Dolphins' hits and hits.
Gaal belted his fourth home run of the season in the nightcap.
In the opener, junior starter Mike Lewis (Webster, N.Y./
McQuaid Jesuit) scattered four hits and one run with eight strikeouts in a complete game effort. Lewis improved his record to 2-2 on the season with the win.
The Dolphins posted a three-spot in the top of the first to open the scoring. Junior Andre
Enriquez (Miami, Fla./
Belen Jesuit Prep) produced an RBI groundout that drove in freshman Andy
Parrino (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) to give Le
Moyne a 1-0 lead. Two batters later,
Gaal delivered a two-run single that scored juniors Brian Hansen (Endicott, N.Y./
Chenango Valley) and Keith Connors (
Jamesport, N.Y./
Commack).
Le
Moyne added another run in the following inning on a two-out double off the bat of Connors that gave the host Dolphins a 4-0 advantage. Cornell answered back with a Kaufman solo home run to right field that narrowed the Le
Moyne lead to 4-1. However, Robert Perez (Miami, Fla./
Belen Jesuit Prep) socked a two-run double that gave the host Dolphins a 6-1 cushion.
Le
Moyne, winners of seven straight contests, next head on the road to take on the Rider Broncs on Saturday, May 7 in a noon
MAAC doubleheader.
