CHARLESTON, S.C. – A.J. Lindsey (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) did not allow an earned run over the final 3 and 1/3 innings and freshman Matt Nandin (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) hit a grand slam home run in his first career at bat as Le Moyne beat Ball State 13-8 for its first win of the season. The Dolphins completed its first three games at the Sandlapper Real Estate Shootout at The Citadel 1-2, while Ball State drops to 1-4 this season.
Junior outfielder Ben Gaal (Manlius, N.Y./CBA) also homered for the Dolphins as Le Moyne built a 7-0 lead. Le Moyne starter Michael Falasca (Sicklerville, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) did not allow a hit over the first four innings, but the Cardinals rallied back with five runs (two earned) in the bottom of the fifth inning. Ball State took advantage of four free passes to score twice in the sixth to knot the score at seven. In the bottom of the eighth, Ball State took the lead on an unearned run.
The Dolphins scored five times with two out in the top of the ninth to capture their first win of the season. Senior catcher Brian Hansen (Endicott, N.Y./Chenango Valley) singled home Mike Affronti (Dix Hills, N.Y./Commack) for the game-tying run. With two outs, Phil St. Amant (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) contributed a pinch hit single and Stephen Crawford (Webster, N.Y./Finger Lakes CC) drove in Hansen with the go-ahead run on an infield single to shortstop.
Sophomore Jamie Rose (Hornell, N.Y./Hornell) singled through the right side and Aaron DiFruscio (Nepean, Ontario/Merivale) doubled home two more runs. After Ball State's second error of the inning, freshman Mike Brown (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal), who pinch ran for DiFruscio, stole home for the game's final run.
Lindsey allowed one unearned run on just two hits over the final three and 1/3 innings for the victory. Falasca struck out two and allowed five runs (two earned) in the first four and 2/3 innings.
