Southern N.H. deals Le Moyne first league softball sweep in nearly two years

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Southern New Hampshire took advantage of five Le Moyne errors in the opener and scored an extra-inning win over the Dolphins in the second game to secure a sweep of a Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader. The Penmen (9-13, 8-2 Northeast-10) won the opener 6-5 and the second game 3-2 in eight innings to deal Le Moyne its first league doubleheader sweep in nearly two years.

Southern New Hampshire took advantage of a season-high five Le Moyne errors in the opener and put together a comeback in the bottom of the seventh in the opener. The Penmen plated one unearned run in the second, but freshman Jennifer Farrelly (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) ripped a solo home run in the bottom of the second to tie the game at one.

Le Moyne took a 5-1 lead in the fifth as Dolphins pitcher Sarah Reed (DeWitt, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) helped her own cause with a three-run triple. Junior catcher Felicia Brum trimmed SNHU's deficit to 5-3 with a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning. The Penmen plated another unearned run to make it 5-4 in the fifth.

SNHU's first four batters reached via the hit batsman, two singles and a base on balls to tie the contest at five. Brum lifted a fly ball to center to score the game-winning run.

In the second game, Southern New Hampshire scored two runs on four hits in the bottom of the first inning, but Le Moyne pitcher Martha Senko (Pine City, N.Y./Elmira Free Academy) struck out 10 over the next six innings to keep the Penmen at bay. Junior Kristen DesLauriers (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) drove in Le Moyne runs in her first two at bats to account for Le Moyne's runs. Melissa Quimby (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baldwinsville) singled and scored in the first, while Reed doubled and scored in the third inning.

Sophomore Ashley Guertin doubled home Karissa Bettencourt with the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth to deal Le Moyne its third extra-inning loss of the season. After dropping including their first nine games and 11 of their first 12 this season, Southern New Hampshire has won eight of its last 10 contests.

The Dolphins had not been swept in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader since Merrimack won both ends of a twinbill in North Andover, Mass. on April 24, 2004. Le Moyne, out of first place for the first time this season, returns to action on Saturday at Saint Anselm.
