SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Sophomore pitcher Sarah Reed (Dewitt, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) saved the opener and won the nightcap as No. 19 Le Moyne swept Assumption 7-5, 4-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference and home softball opener for the Dolphins. Le Moyne (10-8, 2-0 Northeast-10) has won six consecutive games, while Assumption dips to 11-10 overall and 2-3 in league play.
In the opener, Reed struck out two in two scoreless innings of relief. The 2005 NCAA Division II leader in saves, Reed came on with the Dolphins holding onto a 6-5 lead. Reed (4-5, 0.78 ERA) fanned four and scattered four hits for her fourth shutout of the season in game two. She has not allowed a run over the last 23 innings and has not yielded an earned run in 38 and 1/3 innings.
Senior shortstop Jennifer Winters (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) went 3-for-3 with two runs batted in and two doubles to lead the Le Moyne offense in game one. Le Moyne hopped out to a 2-1 lead in support of starter Martha Senko (Pine City, N.Y./Elmira Free Academy), but Assumption tied the score at two on a bases-loaded single by Sarah Taglienti (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) in the fourth.
The Dolphins plated four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-2 edge, but Assumption answered again with three unearned runs in the top of the fifth. Reed came on to pitch the final two innings for the save. Winters doubled home an insurance run in the sixth.
Junior Melissa Quimby (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baldwinsville) connected for a two-run home run and Winters blasted a solo shot in the nightcap. Quimby paced the eight-hit attack with two hits.
