SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Junior Bobby Blevins (Briarcliff, N.Y./Briarcliff) struck out a program-record 18 batters in the opener and classmate T.J. Sheridan (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) improved to 6-0 in the second game as Le Moyne swept Canisius 6-0, 4-2 in a MAAC baseball doubleheader at Dick Rockwell Field. The Dolphins (25-11, 11-5 MAAC) have won eight consecutive games, while Canisius (14-29, 5-12 MAAC) sees its winning streak end at six straight.
In game one, Blevins used 142 pitches, 91 of which were strikes, to dispatch the Golden Griffins and post his second consecutive two-hit shutout. He struck out at least one batter in each inning, fanning the side twice and setting down two batters in five different innings. In a perfect opening trip through the Canisius lineup, Blevins struck out eight of the first nine batters. Over the first ten batters, only cleanup hitter Kevin Mahoney managed to put the ball in play as he grounded out to Keith Connors (Jamesport, N.Y./Commack) to lead off the second inning.
Blevins carried a perfect game (with 11 strikeouts) for the first 4 and 2/3 innings. The sole Canisius rally came on back-to-back singles in the fifth. With two outs, Connor Burke blooped a single into right center and Dan Clifford laced a hit-and-run single through a vacated left side of the infield. Blevins would not allow another hit the rest of the way as he posted his second shutout of the season and fourth of his career.
Senior shortstop Michael Affronti (Dix Hills, N.Y./Commack) supplied the only run Blevins would need with a solo home run, his fifth of the season, in the bottom of the fourth. Keith Connors (Jamesport, N.Y./Commack) drew a bases-loaded walk, Stephen Crawford (Webster, N.Y./Finger Lakes CC) placed a bases-clearing double down the right field line and Andy Parrino (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) executed a suicide squeeze bunt to account for five runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Over his last two starts, Blevins has struck out 32 batters. He struck out 14 in another two-hitter, a 12-0 win at St. Peter's, on Monday. Â For the season, Blevins is 7-2 with a 2.17 ERA and 73 strikeouts in 70.2 innings of action.
Sheridan limited Canisius to one run on three hits in five and 2/3 innings in game two. He is 6-0 with a 1.62 ERA overall and 6-0 with a 1.12 ERA in six MAAC starts. Ryan Woods (Jacksonville, Fla./Englewood) allowed one run on one hit in one inning and A.J. Lindsey (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) got the final out for his team-high fifth save of the season.
Le Moyne scored its four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Connors walked, Crawford singled and Parrino reached on an infield single to load the bases with none out. Affronti cleared the bases with a three-run double in the gap in right center to put Le Moyne up 3-0. He advanced to third on the throw and scored on Brian Hansen's (Endicott, N.Y./Chenango Valley) infield grounder.
Matt Mazurek homered with one out in the sixth for the first Canisius run. The Golden Griffins trimmed it to a 4-2 deficit on Dan Clifford's RBI single in the seventh.
Le Moyne and Canisius close out their three-game series with one game on Sunday at noon.
