NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. - Freshman Jill Gagnon pitched a three-hit shutout in the opener and Lauren Otto allowed one run in game two as Merrimack swept a Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader from Le Moyne 5-0 and 2-1. The Warriors (15-25, 11-11 Northeast-10) have won four straight games, while Le Moyne dips to 22-16 overall and 14-8 in league action.
Gagnon (2-3) struck out four, walked three and allowed just three hits in the game one win. After allowing two hits in the second inning and pitching out of a bases loaded jam in the third inning, Gagnon did not allow a hit the rest of the way. Steph Simon went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI for Merrimack. The Warriors had six hits and touched up Le Moyne starter Sarah Reed (DeWitt, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) for five earned runs in five innings.
In the second game, Le Moyne carried a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh, but the hosts rallied for two runs to achieve the sweep. Kortney Meadows (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) singled to lead off the third and scored on a Kristen DesLauriers (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) double for the only Le Moyne run. DesLauriers led Le Moyne with two hits.
With one out in the seventh, Kristen Belair singled. Tracy Vadala doubled to right center. Simon executed a suicide squeeze bunt which plated Belair and advanced Vadala to third. Simon moved to second to force a Le Moyne defensive play. As the Dolphins attempted to pick Simon off second base, the ball sailed into center field allowing Vadala to march home with the winning run.
Le Moyne remains on the road on Sunday for a doubleheader at Bentley.
