WALTHAM, Mass. - Junior Martha Senko (Pine City, N.Y.) pitched a three-hit shutout in the opener and sophomore Caylinn Christophersen followed with a five-inning one-hitter in the nightcap as Le Moyne College swept Bentley, 4-0 and 9-1, in a Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader at Bentley Sunday afternoon.
Senko's first shutout of the season included nine strikeouts and no walks. Only in the first inning, when the Falcons had the bases loaded with two outs, did Bentley have a runner reach third base.
Christophersen struck out seven without issuing a walk. The only hit she surrendered was an RBI single by freshman catcher Jenna Crowell (Kennebunk, Maine/Cheverus HS) with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, ending the right-hander's bid both a shutout and a no-hitter one out before the game was halted.
In the opener, the Dolphins (24-16, 16-8 NE-10) opened the scoring with two runs in the second inning. Sophomore first baseman Emma Murphy (East Syracuse, N.Y.) drove in the first run with a double and later scored on a fielders' choice.
Le Moyne added to its lead with unearned runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.
The Dolphins broke open game two with six runs in the third inning, amassing seven of their 14 hits during that inning. Murphy, who accounted for three of her team's four runs in the first game, had a two-run double and later scored.
Le Moyne extended the lead to 9-0 with three runs in the fourth, and junior second baseman Melissa Quimby (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) was involved in all three runs. The first two scored on her double, and she later scored on a sacrifice fly.
Quimby, junior centerfielder Lindsey Spaziani (Horseheads, N.Y.), junior catcher Kristen DesLauriers (Liverpool, N.Y.), sophomore leftfielder Sarah Reed (DeWitt, N.Y.) and senior rightfielder Ashley Anderson (Liverpool, N.Y.) all had two hits for the Dolphins.
The Falcons scored their only run of the day in the bottom of the fifth inning of game two. Freshman shortstop Alex Hitchcock (Abington/Abington HS) reached on a two-base error, and eventually scored on Crowell's single.
