March 10, 2007

MEN'S LACROSSE: NO. 1 LE MOYNE HOLDS OFF NO. 3 MERCYHURST IN OVERTIME 8-7

ERIE, Pa. - Alex Bily (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) scored with 2:55 remaining in the first overtime period to lift top-ranked Le Moyne past No. 3 Mercyhurst 8-7 in a non-conference men's lacrosse game at Mercyhurst. The Dolphins (2-0) have won 20 consecutive games overall and 62 straight regular season games. Mercyhurst drops to 3-1 on the season.

Bily's goal stopped a three-goal Mercyhurst run that had closed out regulation. The Lakers rallied from a three-goal deficit to tie the game at seven with nine seconds remaining.

Le Moyne led 3-2 at the half, but the host Lakers scored the first two goals of the second half to take a 4-3 lead. The Dolphins charged back with four consecutive goals to take their biggest lead of the game at 7-4. Juniors Brian Cost (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) and Mike McDonald (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) each scored two consecutive goals each.

Mercyhurst scored the final three goals of regulation to force the extra session. David Osier and Charles Saylor netted extra-man goals to pull the Lakers within one goal. Saylor's goal made it 7-6 with 37 seconds remaining. Le Moyne senior Matt Cassalia (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) won the subsequent faceoff and the Dolphins called timeout with under 30 seconds remaining. Mercyhurst forced a turnover in the Le Moyne end and Mike Thon took advantage of that miscue to tie the score at seven with nine seconds remaining.

Le Moyne outshot its hosts 36-22, including a 21-12 edge in shots on target. Mercyhurst goalkeeper Jason Lashomb made 14 saves, while Le Moyne senior netminder Jared Corcoran (Concord, N.H./Concord) stopped five shots. Le Moyne went 2-for-7 on the extra-man, while the opportunistic Lakers converted 4-of-6.

Le Moyne returns to action on Saturday, March 17 at the Carrier Dome against C.W. Post. That game caps a men's lacrosse tripleheader which also includes Cortland vs. Springfield and Johns Hopkins at Syracuse.
