NO. 1 LE MOYNE SLIPS PAST NO. 4 C.W. POST BEHIND
MCDONALD'S SIX POINTS
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Mike McDonald netted three goals and
dished out three assists as the No. 1 Le Moyne College men's
lacrosse team edged No. 4 C.W. Post, 8-6, in a non-conference
battle of unbeaten teams at Hickox Field. The Dolphins complete the
non-conference portion of their regular season schedule with a 3-0
record against three of the nation's Top 10 teams. The
Pioneers fall to 6-1 on the season.
First-half action saw Le Moyne trail for the first time this
season. But a trio of second-quarter scores by Keith Vetter, Brian
Cost and Mike McDonald saw the Dolphins even the score at four
heading into halftime. McDonald's second goal of the game
knotted a tie at five at the 2:24 mark of the third quarter. With
16 seconds left in the third, Brian Welch put Le Moyne ahead for
good at 6-5.
Cost added his second goal of the day to push the lead to 7-5.
Following a Pioneer tally, Le Moyne's defense preserved a
one-goal lead for seven-plus minutes until McDonald netted his
eighth goal of season on a man-up opportunity with 1:53
remaining.
Le Moyne won despite trailing in the shots category, 29-23, and
winning seven of 17 face-offs. McDonald finished with six points on
three goals and three assists. Cost finished with a pair of goals
and Vetter added an assist after his second-quarter score. Welch
and Alex Bily accounted for the Dolphins' other goals.
Doug McIver earned his third win of the season, collecting 12
saves in 60 minutes worth of action.
The Dolphins open up their Northeast-10 Conference schedule when
they host No. 6 Bryant at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Bulldogs snapped Le
Moyne's streaks of 21 overall wins and 70 Northeast-10
Conference wins last season. Bryant fell to C.W. Post, 11-5,
earlier this season.
