SYRACUSE, NY – Winners of 11 straight games and 16 of their last 17, the Le Moyne softball team powered past Mercy in a pair of non-conference games on Thursday. Caitlin O'Neill led the charge in game one as she collected three hits in a 6-1 victory. The Dolphins scored a season-high 14 runs in game two as shortstop Kelly Schweikert connected for two homeruns. The Dolphins improve to 22-7 overall while Mercy falls to 6-15.
The Dolphins got on the board early in game one. In the bottom of the first, Le Moyne plated two runs on RBI base hits from O'Neill and Schweikert. Le Moyne plated three more in the next inning on a sacrifice fly by Danielle VanGorder and hits by Sarah Reed and O'Neill.
Le Moyne starter Caylinn Christophersen would go the distance in the circle as she scattered four hits, struck out seven and allowed one unearned run.
In game two, the Dolphins exploded for 14 runs to defeat Mercy 14-2 after five innings. Le Moyne jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead after one inning as the Dolphins churned out seven hits, highlighted by a two-run double by Reed.
Le Moyne would put the game out of reach in the third inning. Kelly Schweikert would start it all with a two-run homerun. Following RBI hit by Kimberlee Baker, Reed and O'Neill, Schweikert would cap the nine-run inning with her second home run, a three-run shot.
Freshman Katelyn Fowler would earn the win for the Dolphins, allowing four hits and striking out five in five innings.
On the afternoon, Caitlin O'Neill was 5-for-7 with three RBI's and two runs. Kelly Schweikert connected for four hits, two homeruns and six RBI's. Senior Sarah Reed drove in five runs and score four times on three hits.
Le Moyne returns to NE-10 Conference play on Saturday, April 12th as they host Southern Connecticut for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
