Tampa, Fla. - David Barden scored three goals and dished out an assist and Tom Settle scored once and had three assists to lead 1st-ranked Fort Lewis to an 8-2 win over the 6th-ranked Le Moyne College men's soccer team on Thursday afternoon in the NCAA Division II semifinals at Pepin Stadium.
Junior All-America forward Angelo Reina (Frankfort, N.Y./Utica Notre Dame) gave the Dolphins a 1-0 lead at the 16:00 mark off a pass from sophomore midfielder Marcus Debottis (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse). Reina took Debottis's pass through the defense and beat goalkeeper Zane Wells inside the right post from 12 yards out.
Euan Purcell evened the score at one apiece in the 23rd minute off a corner kick. Fabian Kling headed the ball off of Sam Morris's corner kick and Purcell knocked the ball into the back of the net for his 20th goal of the season.
Barden put the Skyhawks ahead with 7:08 remaining in the first half off a header from the right side of the field. Settle took a pass along the right sideline and found the head of Barden, who scored his 11th goal of the season into the upper right corner of the goal.
Reina had an opportunity with three minutes remaining in the period to knot the score at two apiece, but Wells made a sliding save. Sophomore midfielder Jesse Carr (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) fed the ball up the middle of the field to Reina for a breakaway, but Wells slid and grabbed Reina's shot intended for the far right post with his left hand.
Fort Lewis put the game away over the opening six minutes of the second half. Barden tallied his second goal of the contest with a redirection of a shot by Jeff Jennings one minute and 19 seconds into the stanza. Purcell netted his second tally of the match off a cross from Settle 5:23 into the half. Barden took Settle's cross out of the air and knocked it towards the right post, where Purcell drilled the ball into the back of the net. Barden capped the three-goal outburst off a crossing pass from the right side by Kyle Wood just 35 seconds later.
Reina pulled the Dolphins to within 5-2 at the 59:00 mark off a cross from classmate Zach Kuzemka (Chenango Forks, N.Y./Chenango Forks/Fairfield). Kuzemka sent a cross from outside the penalty box on the right side of the field to Reina at the left post, where he settled the ball and tapped it over the goal line.
Settle extended the Fort Lewis lead to 6-2 by scoring off a feed from Jamie Cunningham with 10:44 to go. Joe Barnd capped the game's scoring with a pair of tallies 2:22 apart. He scored off a pass from Byron Cephers with 9:21 left and off a feed from Settle with 6:59 left.
The Dolphins, who played without second team all-conference goalkeeper Steve White (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) due to a shoulder injury, finished the season with the most wins in the program's history (18). With his two goals, Reina finished the campaign with 20 goals and 46 points, the most in a single-season by a Dolphin in both categories.
Junior Dan St. Jacques (Ottawa, Ontario/Hillcrest), making his second career start and his first since Sept. 6, 2006, made one save in between the pipes for the Dolphins. Wells turned away four shots for the Skyhawks, who advance to the National Championship game for the third time in the last five years. They won the title in 2005 by defeating Northeast-10 Conference member Franklin Pierce.
