Worcester, Mass. - Freshman shortstop Barbara Shea (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) drove in a pair of runs and senior pitcher Jennifer Farrelly (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) tossed a complete-game shutout to lead the 25th-ranked Le Moyne College softball team to a split of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader against Assumption on Thursday afternoon at Marois Field.
Le Moyne opened the nightcap with a run on two hits. Junior left fielder Bailey Phillips (Rochester, N.Y./Greece-Arcadia) reached base on a single with one out and moved to second on a passed ball. Shea followed with a single to center field to drive in Phillips for the only run the Dolphins would need.
The Dolphins tacked on a pair of runs in the fourth and a single run in the seventh inning. Junior second baseman Kelly Schweikert (Rochester, N.Y./Spencerport) and senior catcher Caitlin O'Neill (Pittsford, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) opened the fourth with a double and single, respectively. After pinch-runner Kate Waltman (Alplaus, N.Y./Niskayuna) stole second base, Farrelly singled to left field to knock in Schweikert. Freshman third baseman Morgan Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) followed with a ground out to shortstop to drive in Waltman.
In the seventh, Le Moyne loaded the bases with no outs on a double by freshman first baseman Leah Ford (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski), an infield single by junior center fielder Danielle VanGorder (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) and a walk to Phillips. Following an Assumption pitching change, Shea registered a sacrifice fly to center to plate Ford with the final run of the game.
Farrelly improved to 8-3 on the season by allowing just four hits, while striking out six batters, without allowing a run.
The Greyhounds took the lead in the opener with two runs on four hits. Mary Hancock doubled to left field and Bernadette Fuentes singled to third base to open the inning. Marissa Palumbo followed with a single to center field to plate Hancock. Following a pop out, Ashley Bilodeau singled to left center to drive in Fuentes from third. After a walk loaded the bases, Farrelly took over in the circle and induced a pair of groundouts to Shea to end the inning.
The Dolphins cut their deficit in half in the fifth frame with a run on two hits. With two outs, VanGorder singled to third base and Phillips walked. Shea then singled to center field to knock in VanGorder from second.
Le Moyne evened the score at two apiece in the top of the seventh inning. Ford led off the inning by reaching on an error and was able to advance to second. VanGorder then singled to left center to advanced Ford to third. After VanGorder stole second and a strike out was recorded, Shea reached on another error to allow Ford to score.
The Greyhounds answered back in their half of the inning to win the game. Fuentes led off the inning with an single and advanced to second on a sacrifice. Melissa Bowman then singled to center field to move Fuentes to third. Bilodeau ended the contest with a single to center field to knock in Fuentes.
Farrelly suffered loss in relief, allowing one run on five hits over the final four innings of the contest. Jennifer Lowery picked up the victory, yielding just two runs (one earned) on seven hits, while striking out eight batters.
